Cañada Marsá City Park connects the two places. Cultural landmarks in Benijófar include the Noria Árabe and the Santiago Apóstol Parish Church; festival traditions range from a shared potato meal to markets and fairground attractions.

Cultural History in Benijófar

The Noria Árabe is an irrigation waterwheel on the right bank of the Río Segura, on the outskirts of Benijófar and in the area known as Pantano de Formentera. It dates from the mid-17th century and is considered a symbol of Benijófar and the traditional Huerta. It thus links a specific place by the river with the history of irrigation and the agricultural cultural landscape.

Another historic site is the Santiago Apóstol Parish Church. It was rebuilt after the 1828 earthquake. A temple had already stood there in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The two dates point to different historical layers: the earlier temple predates the present-day church, whose reconstruction followed the 1828 earthquake.

Festivals and Dates

The feast day of San Jaime is celebrated on July 25; the patron saint festivities in his honor begin on the preceding Sunday. The traditional Patatá offers a different focus: residents and visitors meet in the square for a shared meal of potatoes. For one occasion, the calendar sets a specific feast day; for the other, the shared meal takes center stage.

The Fiesta Holandesa is held every year in Cañada Marsá Park as a Dutch King's Day orange festival. Its program includes performances, a market, a flea market, and fairground attractions. This makes it a varied event, while the Patatá is defined above all by its shared meal. The Fiesta de la Primavera is also held every year in April; its program includes, among other things, a paella competition. For specific travel plans, it is advisable to check the dates and program in advance, as the annual event schedule may change.

Riverside Landscape and Trails

El Secano is a former meander and a riverside woodland area on the Río Segura near Benijófar. An environmentally focused recreation park with sports and leisure facilities has been established there. Cañada Marsá City Park is a different landscape feature: it connects Benijófar and Benimar. Together, a riverside area near Benijófar and a city park connecting the two places represent different aspects of the landscape.

The SL-CV 135, an easy hiking trail of cultural interest, runs through the agricultural landscapes of Benijófar. The trail combines exercise with views of the agricultural surroundings; El Secano adds the riverside area and former meander to this picture. As trail conditions may change over time, it is worth checking them before setting out on a specific hike.

Dishes from Different Countries
