In Ojós, historic buildings meet the riverside landscape of the Río Segura. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Agustín, the Museo de Belenes del Mundo and viewpoints such as the Mirador del Estrecho del Solvente represent different facets of the town. There are also paths across bridges and traces of former uses. This lets you explore cultural heritage, landscape and outdoor activities as separate interests.

Culture and history in Ojós

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Agustín was built in the 18th century on the site of a 16th-century church, which in turn stood on the site of a small mosque. Several historical layers can be traced in this building: the present-day church, its predecessor and the earlier religious site. The church has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) since May 2008. Its religious artworks include works associated with the Murcian Baroque and the circle of Salzillo, including the Virgen de los Dolores and a Purísima in the style of Salzillo. The church thus offers insight both into the history of the building and into the town’s artistic connections.

The Museo de Belenes del Mundo is housed in the Casa de la Inquisición, a former 18th-century mansion. The building itself is therefore also part of the history of the townscape. Around 260 nativity scene displays are currently on view; the collection as a whole comprises more than 805 displays. These figures refer to different totals: the items on display and the full collection. By prior reservation, the museum offers workshops and guided tours of the village. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, make a reservation in advance.

Near Ojós, the Yeseras de Ojós are located along the Pila del Caballo route. Here you can see former open-pit gypsum quarries and factories, as well as several kilns, a warehouse and a circular grinding area. These traces of past gypsum processing complement the town’s religious and artistic history.

Landscapes along the Río Segura

The Azud de Ojós holds back the waters of the Río Segura, creating a contrast between the rocky gorge and fertile traditional huertas. The surroundings in the Valle de Ricote are shaped by the rugged limestone mountains of the Sierra de Ricote, Sierra de La Navela and Sierra del Chinte, as well as the cliffs of El Solvente and El Salitre. River gorges contrast with the greenery of the huerta. The Azud offers sweeping panoramic views of the Río Segura, the valley’s rock faces and traditional cultivated fields; the area is well suited to enjoying nature, photography and rural tourism. From the Puente Colgante, you can also look out over the river, the huerta and Ojós’s natural landscape.

The Mirador del Estrecho del Solvente is located within the municipality of Ojós. From there, the view stretches between rock faces and traditional huertas to the calm course of the Río Segura. As part of the Entre Palmeras y Limoneros network of viewpoints, the mirador is suitable for birdwatching, hiking and nature tours. The Rutas de los Puentes de Ojós are suitable for families, hikers and photography enthusiasts. Alongside the natural scenery, the bridges themselves are a defining feature of the routes.

The bridge at Salto de la Novia can be reached via the Área Recreativa Soto and is part of the Corredor Verde del Río Segura. To reach the Puente Tibetano del Solvente, access the right bank of the Río Segura via the El Solvente hydroelectric station, then follow a narrow path beside the Acequia Ojós-Ulea. The two bridges therefore have different access routes.

Water infrastructure, festivals and activities

The Noria de la Ribera is located on the left-hand side of the Acequia Ojós-Ulea. The waterwheel is seven metres in diameter and has an iron frame. For visits, make a reservation and check availability and official visiting hours directly with the Ayuntamiento de Ojós or local tourism operators.

Ojós’s patron saint festivals take place in late August. The programme includes processions in honour of Saint Augustine and the Virgen de la Cabeza, as well as a fireworks display; the exact dates may vary from year to year. Camping and barbel fishing are suitable activities at the Presa del Mayés. Alongside cultural heritage and walking routes, seasonal festival traditions and activities on the water are further options to consider when planning your trip.
