Cieza: Archaeology, Heritage and River Landscape
Accommodation in Cieza
Cieza has many facets, including the Cañón de Almadenes and the Segura, archaeological sites, museums and historic buildings. During your stay, you can focus on the river landscape, the history of Medina Siyasa or the seasonal blossom.
Landscape, River and Blossom Season
The Cañón de Almadenes is almost four kilometres long and more than 150 metres deep. It is home to various birds of prey, including Bonelli’s eagle. It is considered the region’s most important refuge for the Eurasian otter and is home to the largest population of this species.
The Sendero Azul Paseo Ribereño runs along both banks of the Segura through Cieza. The route takes in diverse landscapes, as well as a rich variety of flora and fauna. Those interested in the river landscape will find a different focus here than in the canyon: the route follows both sides of the river and highlights the natural diversity along its banks.
The Floración de Cieza blossom season falls at the end of winter and draws visitors to fields of peach, plum, almond, apricot, Paraguayo and nectarine trees. A route also takes its name from the blossom: the Vía Verde de la Floración de Cieza runs for almost ten kilometres and can be combined with other paths to create a circular route of almost 40 kilometres. If you want to experience the Floración, you can use the season as an important reference point when planning your trip.
Archaeology and History
The Cueva-Sima de la Serreta contains more than fifty rock art figures on two panels. They belong to schematic rock art, and some are in a semi-naturalistic style. Evidence of habitation spans the Neolithic, Romanisation and the Islamic Middle Ages. The cave therefore offers a glimpse both of its art and of the long history of human use.
The Medina Siyasa archaeological site comprises around 700 houses, built in the 11th century; it flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries. Some of the houses, along with their associated streets and walls, can be seen on site. The Museo de Siyasa displays scale models of Houses 6 and 10. The museum also has a collection and exhibition featuring more than 90,000 objects from archaeology, art, science and ethnography. Comparing the visible remains of the site with the models offers two different ways to explore the history of the place.
Architecture, Crafts and Festival Traditions
At the Balcón del Muro, two periods of construction come together in a historic ensemble: an old fortress dating from the 15th century and the present-day wall, built in 1898. The Basílica de Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción offers a different architectural feature. Its interior is divided into three naves, and the main façade features reliefs with Baroque volutes.
The Pequeño Museo del Esparto documents traditional manual esparto processing and displays the equipment and tools used. Visits are by appointment. The visit also includes demonstrations of esparto craftsmanship and the making of yarn and scouring pads, so arrange your visit in advance. The Museo Molino de Teodoro is housed in an old mill dating from 1507 and adds an example of milling history to the area’s historic sites.
Cieza also holds a fair and patron saint festivals in honour of San Bartolomé. The dates vary from year to year, so if you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for your travel year.
Routes by Type and Interest
The Ruta de los Puentes covers 7.5 kilometres, crossing various bridges and footbridges along the Segura through Cieza. At 13.7 kilometres, the Vía Verde del Chicharra Cieza is longer and follows the former railway line of the railway known as the Chicharra. It is a walking and cycling route. The Cieza section is also part of the Camino de la Vera Cruz pilgrimage route to Caravaca. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by their length, stated use and course.
When making your choice, you can consider different questions: Are you interested in a route linking the river and bridges, a former railway line, or the option of combining paths into a longer circular route? Together with the archaeological sites, museums and buildings, these offer different themes to consider when planning your stay in Cieza.
