Archena brings together the landscapes along the Río Segura and a rich architectural and cultural history. The place is shaped by archaeological finds from the municipality, historic buildings and the thermal springs of the Balneario de Archena. The range of options can also help you plan your trip: you might focus on museum exhibits, architecture, riverside paths or the views from the heights of El Ope.

Architecture and History in Archena

The Ermita del Balneario was built in 1878 under the patronage of the Virgen de la Salud. Its neo-medieval style combines Romanesque architectural elements with a vertical design reminiscent of Gothic architecture. The Casa Grande offers a different architectural chapter: this Renaissance building dates from the 15th century. The exterior is of particular interest to visitors, as the interior has been converted into offices and staff rooms. The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista completes the picture with a distinctly Baroque interior design.

The Hotel Termas at the Balneario de Archena is also architecturally remarkable. Its features include a dome and a Mozarabic staircase designed by Manuel Castaños. The remains of the Castillo de Archena are classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Access is restricted because they are located on the grounds of a military residence. Check locally before visiting, as access restrictions may change.

The patron saint celebrations in honour of Corpus Christi and the Virgen de la Salud take place on varying dates between late May and June. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific dates in advance.

Museums and Local Traditions

The Museo de Archena is divided into four interconnected rooms. It includes a permanent archaeological collection from Archena and a space for temporary exhibitions. On display are archaeological artefacts and works of great historical significance found in the municipality. The combination of a permanent collection and changing exhibitions offers two different ways to explore Archena: through its archaeological finds and through changing themes.

The Museo del Esparto y Antigüedades is located in the Palacete de Villa-Rías. Its focus is on the municipality’s former esparto grass and pottery traditions, dating from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. The objects on display include historic agricultural tools and handmade items crafted from esparto grass. Another local highlight is the Noria Acebuche de la Algaida, one of the largest water-lifting wheels of its kind in the Región de Murcia.

The Segura, the Balneario and Walking Routes

The Río Segura shapes the landscapes of the Valle de Ricote and, in turn, Archena. Irrigated orchards, dryland areas and nearby limestone mountains create distinct scenery. The Museo de Archena is situated on the riverbank in a natural setting near Monte Tío Pío. Archena’s riverside promenade stretches seven kilometres along the Segura and is also the setting for the Ruta del poeta Vicente Medina. Along the route, poems are displayed on stone monoliths.

The Ruta Vía Romana offers a specific timeframe to help with planning: it is 15.5 kilometres long, rated moderate and takes around four hours. It starts at the Museo de Archena and follows the paved riverside promenade along the Segura towards the Balneario de Archena. Allow for the approximate duration and check current trail conditions before setting out. Another local route is the Ruta de los Miradores del Monte Ope. Hikers can climb into the El Ope mountain area and enjoy views over Archena from its viewpoints.

The Balneario de Archena is a thermal spa covering more than 200,000 m² in the natural landscape of the Valle de Ricote. The entire complex is subject to extensive landscape and environmental protection. The Balneario has thermal pools; access may vary, so it is advisable to check current arrangements before your visit. The history of the Balneario is traced back to the use of its thermal springs by Iberian settlers in the 5th century BC.
