Fenazar’s cultural and historical character is reflected in the Church of Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles, its traditional routes and its patron saint festivals. The area also features a very dry landscape and more recent sports and recreational facilities. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can focus on cultural history, a festival date, or sports and open spaces.

Church and traces of earlier settlement

Construction of the Church of Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles del Fenazar began in 1907. From the outside, the building resembles a crenellated fortress. Inside, the church is divided into three naves: the central nave is higher than the two side naves. A simple wooden altarpiece holds the image of Our Lady of the Angels, the settlement’s patron saint. The fortress-like exterior and simply designed altarpiece are complemented by the clearly structured interior architecture.

La Hoya is described as El Fenazar’s oldest central settlement and the site of its earliest human presence. Carthaginian coins from the 3rd century BC are also associated with La Hoya; they are said to have been lost there by travelers. A pre-Roman route from Alicante to Archena passed through Fortuna and Fenazar. Archaeological finds may suggest that Fenazar was an important passage point in antiquity and a route to the thermal springs of Archena, Fortuna or Mula.

These route associations carry different degrees of certainty: the route from Alicante to Archena is identified as pre-Roman and described as passing through Fortuna and Fenazar; the idea that Fenazar was an ancient passage point remains a possible interpretation of archaeological finds. The name “Camino Viejo de Orihuela” has also been preserved in Fenazar.

Pilgrimage traditions and festival dates

El Fenazar’s patron saint festivals are dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels. During the Romería de la Virgen de los Ángeles, the image of the Virgin returns from the Ermita de Campotejar to its church in El Fenazar on the first Sunday in May. Pilgrims accompany it on foot and in festive floats. If you plan your trip around this event, check the festival dates in advance.

The patron saint festivals combine religious events with music, sports, children’s games and folk traditions. This mix is documented in the 2026 festival program; it may vary from one edition to the next. Another route is the Camino de Lignum Crucis. It connects Granja de Rocamora with the Santuario de la Vera Cruz in Caravaca de la Cruz and passes through El Fenazar. This pilgrimage route was described in 2023.

Landscape and today’s open spaces

Fenazar lies in a very dry landscape with sparse vegetation and some low-growing scrubland plants. At the same time, agriculture is the area’s main economic activity. Citrus fruits and other fruit are produced in considerable quantities. The landscape and economic profile offer different insights into the area’s local character.

Opened in June 2026, Parque Deportivo El Fenazar is an open space for recreation and sports. Facilities include a children’s play area shaded by a pergola, an outdoor calisthenics area, and courts for futsal and basketball. Facilities may change; check the park’s current condition before your visit.

A new public caliche court opened in February 2026 for traditional sports and recreation. Its infrastructure includes partial fencing, retaining walls, benches and waste bins. Check the facility’s current access and condition before visiting. The recreational areas described here therefore differ in both their uses and their facilities.
