Church of the Assumption: Architecture and History
The Church of the Assumption is a stone Gothic building with a single nave and a flat-ended choir. The choir is covered by a pointed barrel vault supported by transverse arches. An Early Gothic portal from the early 13th century provides access to the portico. The square stone bell tower dates from the 13th century and adds another medieval element to the church’s clean design.
The main altar includes two Renaissance paintings on wooden panels from the first half of the 16th century. They probably come from the original altarpiece by Menaut de Oscariz. Alongside the architecture, these works offer a separate point of art-historical interest through their date and attributed origin. In the Ultzama Valley, the church is cited as one of the valley’s notable historical and artistic landmarks.
The village’s history also reaches back to the Middle Ages: Urrizola-Galain was a royal estate. In 1211, under Sancho VII the Strong, its dues were standardized by a fuero. This historical reference adds an aspect of administration and governance in that period to the story of the church.
