If you are looking for a hotel in Oskotz, you can plan your trip around your main interest: hiking the circular route to Irumuga, walking stages between towns in the Imotz and Basaburua valleys, local history, or a guided tour of Curly Creek Ranch. Local attractions range from marked trails and forest landscapes to architectural history and a look at the ranch’s energy production.

Hiking around Oskotz

The hike from Oskotz to Irumuga starts in the upper part of the town and forms a circular route. On the return journey, it follows the Cañada de las Provincias to Oskotz; along the way, it passes through a beech forest that is almost flat. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The Cañada Real de Las Provincias, also known as the Cañada de los Toros, has kept its route almost unchanged and was demarcated and signposted by the Government of Navarre. It reaches Oskotz; from there, a signposted section continues to Etxaleku. Its route then continued through Imotz and Larraun towards Azpeitia. The distinction is useful when choosing a trail: the Irumuga route returns to Oskotz, while the Cañada continues from there as a marked section to Etxaleku. Check the signs locally.

Another signposted trail network connects Etxaleku, Oskotz, Muskitz, Oskotz, Zarrantz, Eraso, Latasa, Goldaratz, Urritza, Udabe, and Beramendi before returning to Etxaleku. It links towns in the Imotz and Basaburua valleys via paths and tracks, and is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. You can walk short stages of two to three hours between towns. This makes it easy to distinguish between the circular route to Irumuga and a stage on the trail network: the first returns to Oskotz, while the second connects towns in the two valleys.

Culture and local history

The Church of San Cristóbal in Oskotz is the oldest church in the valley and dates from the 14th century. It is Gothic, while also featuring some architectural elements from the 18th century. The lower part of Oskotz is laid out along the Royal Road; Juantxenea is one of the houses along this route. The church and the road offer different perspectives on local history: one is a place of worship with medieval origins, the other the layout of the lower part of town along the Royal Road.
