Ollobarren combines a historic focal point with opportunities to explore the surrounding area on foot. The village is home to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción; a hiking route leads to the Agujero de Ollobarren, and the climb to the Basilica of Santiago de Lokiz is 7.4 kilometers long. Architecture, local history and trails offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Church and Local History

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a medieval building dating from the early 13th century, partly altered in the 16th century. Its entrance portal brings together a pointed arch, diamond-decorated archivolts and figurative capitals. The archivolts frame the arch, while the figures on the capitals add a distinctive accent. Those interested in architectural forms can focus on individual elements of the portal rather than judging the church by its age alone.

The tower and main altarpiece add further periods to the building’s history. The Baroque tower was built in 1673 by the masters Juan Ruiz de Galarreta and José de Lagurrea, who came from Estella. The Rococo main altarpiece contains a seated Madonna and Child in the Hispano-Flemish style, dating from around 1500. In this way, building phases from the early Middle Ages to the Baroque stand alongside an artwork from an earlier period.

The village’s history offers another point of interest: Ollobarren was once a royal domain and is documented in 1280. This historical detail complements the architectural features with a glimpse into the history of the settlement.

Hiking Trails and Destinations

The route starts at the church in Ollobarren, on the NA-7310 road near kilometer 3. It is marked with white and yellow trail markers; check the signs along the way. The destination is a dark cave tunnel about 30 meters long. A flashlight is not necessary. However, take care on the rocky terrain.

Another trail climbs from Ollobarren to the Basilica of Santiago de Lokiz. The ascent is 7.4 kilometers long. Since trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current conditions before setting out.

Different considerations come into play when choosing between the two destinations: at the Agujero, the dark tunnel itself is the goal; for the ascent to the basilica, the 7.4-kilometer route is a key consideration. This lets you compare a distinctive trail destination with the length of the climb.

One route passes the chapel of Santa Eulalia on the return to Ollobarren. The walk offers views of the Sierra de Lokiz and its panorama.

Landscape and Village Setting

Ollobarren lies at the foot of the steep slope of Lóquiz. Its natural surroundings include downy oaks and holm oaks, which are considered a tourist attraction. Heraldic shields on some of the houses are also worth seeing. Trip planning thus brings together different interests: the church’s architectural history and the village setting on the one hand, and the landscape and trails on the other.
