Galar: Church, Camino de Santiago and Galar Trail
Accommodation in Galar
Highlights of a stay in Galar include the parish church of San Martín, the Camino de Santiago and the Galar Trail. They show the village from different perspectives: through its architectural history, the view from a pilgrimage route and a sporting event. For travel planning, each of these highlights has its own details and timing.
The Parish Church of San Martín
The parish church of San Martín de Galar was built largely in the 16th century by stonemason Miguel de Iriarte. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; ribbed and star vaults cover the building. A Romanesque portal from the late 12th century has also been preserved. Its capitals are decorated with interlace, foliage and animals. The church thus brings together a building constructed mainly in the 16th century and a much older portal. The floor plan, vaults and portal ornamentation offer different architectural points of interest for anyone interested in ecclesiastical architecture.
The Camino de Santiago and the Landscape
The Camino Francés stage from Cizur Menor to Puente la Reina crosses the road to Galar and passes the village, which sits at a higher elevation. On the Camino de Santiago from Pamplona to Puente la Reina, Galar can be seen on the left as the paved route climbs between cultivated hills. One route description highlights the elevated village along the stage, while the other draws attention to the view of Galar along the ascending path.
In the Cendea de Galar area, the original mixed woodland vegetation of holm oaks, Pyrenean oaks and small-leaved oaks is almost entirely limited to the northern slope of El Perdón. Large parts of the remaining landscape are characterized by artificially planted pine forests. The Cendea de Galar extends across the northern, shaded side of the Sierra and has traditionally been shaped by the cultivation of cereals, fodder crops and legumes. The regional landscape description thus presents a range of vegetation and land-use types side by side.
Completed cycle paths connect Galar with Arlegui and Subiza. If you plan to use these connections for a ride, check local conditions in advance.
The Galar Trail 2.0
The Galar Trail 2.0 mountain race takes place every year on the first Sunday in March and starts at 10:00 a.m. Galar is one of the designated start and finish locations. The route passes through the Sierra de Erreniega, is approximately 15 kilometers long and includes 850 meters of elevation gain. Route details may be adjusted for future editions. Check the event date and participation requirements before your trip.
Memorial and Cultural Heritage
The Lavadero de Galar was reconstructed as a memorial site in 2015. A plaque at the Lavadero commemorates women and the hard, necessary work they carried out over generations.
The online archive of the intangible cultural heritage of the Cendea de Galar documents the region's intangible cultural heritage. Entries include “07 Alimentación 1,” “09 Comidas,” “10 Comidas,” “11 Bendición de la mesa” and “12 Menús festivos.” The memorial plaque and the archive highlight different things: they preserve memories of work as well as topics related to the region's food and festive culture.
