Ezcároz can be explored through its architectural history, hiking trails and landscape. The Salazar River runs through the village; the protected area “Río Salazar,” designated as ZEC ES2200012, also includes the municipal area. Much of the area is covered by pine, beech and oak forests. These features offer different ways to enjoy your stay: you can explore the village through its religious buildings and historic infrastructure, or focus on its trails and forested surroundings.

Village Character and Architectural History

Paved streets and grand-looking Pyrenean houses shape the village’s character. The houses have steeply pitched roofs covered with flat tiles. As you walk through Ezcároz, you will encounter this distinctive architectural style, which differs from the village’s religious and technical structures.

The parish church of San Román was built late in the 16th century. Its main altarpiece is dedicated to Saint Román and attributed to Miguel de Casanova y Aibar. The Gothic Ermita de Santa María Magdalena stands on the edge of the village. Access to the church and hermitage may vary.

The old mill and the dam are also part of the village’s history. The decommissioned mill was built in 1767, and its machinery is still there. The present-day dam was built in 1907, after a severe flood destroyed the wooden dam. The Palacio de Iturriria is one of the palaces listed as “cabo de armería” in the Kingdom of Navarre.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The Sendero de Jasule hiking trail starts at the church. The 2026 Salazar hiking guide gives its length as 5.4 kilometres and its elevation gain as 250 metres; figures may vary between published versions of the route. The trail leads to the Jasule waterfalls and passes the Ezcároz viewpoint, with its panoramic information board. The route description thus combines waterfalls and a viewpoint on a circular trail.

A hiking trail to the bordales also starts at the church and leads from there to the cemetery. Bordales are a traditional agricultural system consisting of a Borda and the adjoining fields on the mountain slopes. The term therefore refers not just to a single building, but to the combination of a Borda and cultivated land. The trail offers a way to discover a traditional form of agricultural land use.

Summer and Patron Saint Festivities

Ezcároz has a prepared river bathing area for summer. The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Carmen take place from 16 to 20 July. The programme may vary from year to year, so if you plan to visit during the festivities, check the latest dates and events.

Getting There from Pamplona

From Pamplona, Ezcároz can be reached via the A-21 Pyrenees motorway towards Lumbier–Navascués and the NA-140 between Burguete and Isaba. Check road conditions before setting off. This allows you to combine your journey and stay with the aspects of the village that interest you, whether its architectural history, hiking trails or the summer use of the river bathing area.
