The Museo de la AlmadĂa, the limestone gorge of Foz de Burgui and several routes of varying lengths offer practical ways to plan your trip.

Rafting and traditional work

The Museo de la Almadía is located in Burgui’s town hall. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the almadieros from the Roncal, Salazar and Aézkoa valleys and shows how wood was processed and transported. It covers everything from auctioning or selling trees in lots, to shaping them into rounded, squared-off logs, and transporting them along the rivers. The wood was sold in Navarra, Aragón or Catalonia. Check when the museum is open before your visit.

The Pueblo de los Oficios also explores the traditional ways of life and work in mountain villages and Pyrenean valleys. The interpretive trail explains how a charcoal burner’s hut—a so-called carbonera—was built and how charcoal was made. The stops also include an old bread oven. On Día de la Almadía, three traditional rafts travel down the Esca River. The festival has the status of “national tourist interest”; dates vary from year to year.

Bridge, church and historic buildings

Burgui’s Roman bridge retains its four original arches and the old raised roadway. Its river piers are shaped to break the current of the Esca. The bridge is also a landmark on the walking trail through Foz de Burgui. The 16th-century Church of San Pedro houses the old organ from Leyre Monastery. The Virgen del Castillo hermitage stands on the site of Burgui’s former medieval fortress.

Another example of traditional construction is Burgui’s Nivera: an underground, cylindrical stone building. Its covering protects the snow from the weather outside. Together with the stops along the Pueblo de los Oficios, this building offers a glimpse into former ways of working and adapting to local conditions.

Gorge and trails by length and character

Foz de Burgui is a limestone gorge designated as a nature reserve. It is home to one of Europe’s largest vulture colonies. The Foz de Burgui linear walking trail is 1.16 km long and rated easy. It connects the medieval bridge with a viewpoint for birdwatching along the Esca.

Another trail leads from Burgui on a marked, 4 km climb to Virgen de la Peña at an elevation of 1,294 m. The first 3 km run through the forest; in the final section, the trail opens up to views across the Pyrenees. The route details highlight the difference between the two walking options: a short, easy linear route compared with a longer climb through the forest, followed by views across the Pyrenees. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

For more hikes, the waymarked GR 15.2 circular route passes through Burgui, Larra and Sasi. Mountain bike route 14 runs from Burgui for 13 km, with 550 m of positive elevation gain, to the high point of Las Coronas. The annual Cross del AlmadĂa offers 10 km and 5 km routes, which can also be completed on foot. The circular route, climb and event courses can thus be distinguished by their stated type and length.

Summer, events and practical information

In summer, the dam on the Esca becomes a natural bathing area. From the car park on the NA-137, you can reach the bathing area on foot via the Roman bridge. Water conditions and local guidance may change; check before your visit. Another annual tradition is El Obispo, celebrated in Burgui on 6 December in honour of Saint Nicholas.

For visitors travelling by motorhome, the Zabalea motorhome area offers 50 pitches, toilets, showers, a fountain, picnic areas, electrical hookups and a wastewater disposal point. Facilities may change; check the details before using them. One route to Burgui follows the N-240 to Lumbier, then the NA-178 and Puerto de las Coronas to Navascués, and from there the NA-214 to Burgui. Check for road changes or restrictions before your trip.
