Ardaitz lies on a rise above the left bank of the Erro River, at the transition between the plain and the hills. The steep slopes of the Sierra de Labia shelter the village. The riverside setting and historic buildings offer different points of reference when choosing a destination: you can assess Ardaitz by its landscape, village appearance and traditional routes.

The local road NA 2331 leads to Ardaitz from kilometre point 14.83 of the NA-2330. Check road conditions and numbering before setting out.

Village Appearance, Church and Fountain

Buildings made of dressed stone, towers and architectural elements from the 16th century can be found in the centre of Ardaitz. The dressed-stone houses bear inscriptions from the 17th and 19th centuries. Ardaitz also has a medieval tower with a three-arched window.

The Gothic fountain is near the village centre. Its pointed barrel vault, made of dressed stone, protects the water source. The Church of the Apostle Peter is in the Early Gothic, or Proto-Gothic, style. Its tower is Romanesque, and its portal is Gothic. Inside is a 14th-century baptismal font; the female figure on it probably depicts the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus.

Architectural Features of Individual Houses

The Zarkumena house features a relief of a Greek cross, decorated with six-petalled roses and two additional crosses. The inscription reads “Ano 1608”. On the Zuriona house, the central keystone of the portico bears the inscription “1844”.

The central keystone of the archway at Casa del Cura bears a Calvary motif. The door arch of the Patia house features a coat of arms with three bars and two stars; one star is above the first bar and the other above the third. A 2023 description mentions bricked-up Moorish-style windows and a later-sealed two-lobed opening at the Txantxumena house.

Landscape and Routes

The pastures of Ardaitz, Aintzioa and Measkoitz, considered together, are smaller and drier than the other pastures in the area. The vegetation includes sub-Mediterranean downy oak forests, light-loving scrubland and Scots pine.

A traditional access route leads from Ardaitz to Ogal and its traditional shepherds’ huts. A local walking trail leads to Aintzioa; a marked branch leads to the summit of Larrogain and passes by the Argibel dolmen. Check trail markings and conditions before hiking. The Ardaitz dolmen group comprises Ardaitz I, Ardaitz II and Ezkiregi.

Borda Zuriona also offers insight into rural architecture: a 2009 survey describes it as having a rectangular floor plan, a lower room for livestock, an upper hayloft and a two-part roof made of Arabic roof tiles. The same survey noted partial damage to the roof and building structure.
