Aranarache combines a nature trail with various destinations and buildings featuring distinctive details from the 16th century and the Baroque period. When planning a stay, you can therefore take both the character of the trails and the architecture into consideration.

Hiking from Aranarache

The Aranarache nature trail begins in the town center, next to the municipal frontón. Its first option is 7.4 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 379 meters, and takes an estimated 2 hours and 5 minutes. This means you can plan the distance, elevation gain and time required for this option precisely. Check the local signage and trail conditions before setting out.

The other options have different highlights. One leads to the monumental tree MN-33, known as Haya de Limitaciones. Another crosses the summit of Arnotegui to visit a protohistoric hillfort; for this option, you should take access conditions into account. A further route passes through the beech forest in the Burgalbago area. The trail options therefore differ in whether they feature a named natural monument, a hillfort on a summit, or a stretch of forest.

A hiking trail also leads from Aranarache to the Ermita de San Lorenzo. It is located on the edge of the mountain range, at the trail's highest point; from there, you can enjoy views of the valley and find a recreation area. Check trail conditions and the state of the area on site.

Historic buildings

The Ermita de San Lorenzo is a rectangular building dating from the 16th century. A room for shepherds is attached to the rear. This additional room is part of the building's described design and distinguishes it from a simple rectangular structure.

The Palacio de los Albizu is a 16th-century manor house with a distinctly horizontal design. One window on the main floor features a balustrade with spiral-shaped balls and a triple semicircular arch; a coat of arms bearing a rake motif is set in the center. This building combines the manor house's horizontal design with the detailed craftsmanship of a single window.

The Ermita de San Miguel near Aranarache is a rustic building made of ashlar masonry. Its main altar is dedicated to Saint Michael. The main niche contains an 18th-century Baroque statue depicting Saint Michael striking down the devil with a lance. The comparison shifts from the horizontal design of the Palacio to a religious building with Baroque altar furnishings and imagery.

Landscape and regional setting

Aranarache borders the Sierra de Urbasa to the north and the Sierra de Santiago de Lóquiz to the south. The neighboring Urbasa-Andía Nature Park offers opportunities for hiking, caving, mountaineering and cycling. The park also has several routes for different groups. This distinction is useful when planning: the nature trail begins in the town center of Aranarache, while the activities and routes mentioned are in the nature park.

Getting there and cheese from Aranarache

The route to Aranarache follows the road from Estella to Urbasa (NA-718); after Zudaire, take the turnoff onto the NA-7130. As road conditions can change, check them before your trip.

The Pérez de Albéniz family cheese dairy is located in Aranarache. The family home and the main sales outlet for their products are also there. If you are planning a possible purchase, check availability before your trip.
