Viniegra de Abajo brings together hiking routes, the Valle del Río Urbión and an architectural history visible in several buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Viniegra de Abajo, you can plan your trip around whether a specific GR stage, the river and mountain scenery, or the architecture in the village is your main interest. A stage of the GR 190 ends in Viniegra de Abajo; another hiking trail runs between the village and the Embalse de Mansilla. There are also palatial houses, the church and Casa de Las Claritas.

The Urbión landscape

The Valle del Río Urbión opens up on the Mediterranean side of the Picos de Urbión and extends entirely through Viniegra de Abajo. The village is also one of the seven villages incorporated into the Parque Natural del Alto Najerilla. In the natural park, the River Najerilla and its tributaries form pools, rapids and waterfalls; the landscape also includes mountain pastures, Iberian peaks and mixed forests. The valley and the natural park offer different perspectives: the Valle del Río Urbión stretches entirely through the village, while the park’s landscape also encompasses rivers and tributaries, pastures, peaks and forests. If you want to make nature the focus of your trip, you can distinguish between the valley’s direct connection to the village and the broader landscape of the natural park.

Hiking: a stage and a trail to the reservoir

The Valvanera–Viniegra de Abajo hiking stage of the GR 190 is 16.5 km long. This distance gives you a specific reference point for planning your hike. Route details may be revised, so check the current route before setting out. Another hiking trail leads between Viniegra de Abajo and the Embalse de Mansilla. It follows the old path between the two villages and partly runs along the Cañada Real de Santa Coloma drovers’ road. For planning by distance, the GR figure provides a specific reference point; the route to the reservoir is defined by the old path and the section along the Cañada Real. You can therefore take the two trails into account using different features.

Palatial houses and architectural styles

Numerous palatial houses in Viniegra de Abajo are considered a legacy of the Indios. The church is built from local reddish stone. A round arch spans its portico; the square tower has three sections. Architectural elements date from the mid-16th to the 18th century. Casa de Las Claritas offers different architectural features: the building has a square floor plan and a symmetrical façade. Ashlar blocks emphasize the doorway, the corners of the building and the windows; red sandstone was used predominantly. As you look around, you can distinguish between materials, floor plans, façade design and the tower’s structure. At the church, the portico and tower stand out, while at Casa de Las Claritas, the symmetrical façade and the ashlar blocks are notable.

Getting there and Paramanos

Two sets of roads are listed for the drive from Logroño: one follows the N-111 and LR-333, while the other follows the A-12, LR-427, LR-136, LR-113 and LR-333. Check road conditions before your journey. The Paramanos recreation area is on the River Urbión, on the road from Viniegra de Abajo to Viniegra de Arriba. If you plan to visit, check access information before setting out. This lets you factor both the road journey to Viniegra de Abajo and the recreation area’s location on the Urbión into your travel plans, without treating them as part of the same hiking route.
