Torremontalbo combines the landscapes of the Najerilla with vineyards and historic buildings. This gives you several concrete themes to explore during a hotel stay: irrigated land and riverside woodland, routes along the Camino Natural del Ebro, the architecture of the Palacio de los Marqueses de la Ventosa, and winegrowing. Which of these you focus on depends on whether you are most interested in nature, outdoor activities, culture or wine.

River landscapes and routes

The Huertas del Najerilla (HT-6) cover 12.25 hectares. They form an extensive area of floodplains and irrigated land with high productivity and landscape value. Along this stretch of the Camino Natural del Ebro, traditional gardens are irrigated by an extensive network of irrigation channels.

Between Torremontalbo and the mouth of the Najerilla lies a riverside woodland designated as an Espacio de Vegetación Singular in the PEPMAN of La Rioja. Otters and European mink inhabit this protected riverside woodland. Floodplains, irrigated gardens and riverside vegetation thus represent different aspects of the river landscape.

Stage 14.1 of the Camino Natural del Ebro follows the LR-318 and then a local road to Torremontalbo. On this route, the rest area by the Najerilla River is reached after 4.2 kilometres and 55 minutes. A branch of the route passes through riverside woodland and along small river beaches to the mouth of the Najerilla. The distance and time given refer to the rest area; the branch leads to the river mouth.

Historic buildings

Several manor houses and palaces reflect Torremontalbo’s aristocratic past. The Palacio de los Marqueses de la Ventosa is a 16th-century building with a stone façade and heraldic coats of arms. The Church of Santo Domingo de los Silos dates from the 18th century and is attached to the Torre-Fuerte de Torremontalbo complex. The palace is notable for its façade and coats of arms, while the church stands out for its architectural integration into the complex.

The Puente sobre el río Najerilla is another striking structure: the stone bridge offers views of the valley and is a pleasant place for a walk. The townscape brings together different historical and landscape connections, from its aristocratic past to the river environment.

Wine country, views and festival date

Extensive vineyards surround Torremontalbo. In autumn, the vine leaves turn reddish. Higher areas offer views of the valley, vineyards and surrounding mountains. The autumn colours are seasonal; the views mentioned can be enjoyed from higher areas.

In Torremontalbo and the nearby area, family-run wineries welcome visitors to learn about the wine-making process and enjoy tastings. If you plan to attend a tasting, confirm directly with the winery that visits are available. The local festival of Santo Domingo de Silos is associated with 20 December. If you would like to include the date in your travel plans, check the current programme before you travel.
