Pradillo: Advertising Benches, Almazuelas and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Pradillo
Pradillo lies directly on the N-111, which connects Logroño with Soria. Traces of cultural history and a forested setting shape the town’s character: these include the advertising benches, the Almazuelas tradition, and routes through the landscape along the RĂo Iregua. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are mainly interested in architecture and local history, or in forests and trails.
Advertising Benches and Vernacular Architecture
Pradillo’s advertising benches consist of fourteen concrete benches arranged in two rows of seven. Advertising signs made from ceramic tiles produced by the Cerámicas Riojanas factory are set into the backrests. The advertising initiative dates back to 1935. On September 23, 2025, their protected status as Bien Cultural de Interés Regional was announced; the benches are also listed in La Rioja’s regional register of cultural heritage.
The household bread ovens are also part of the architectural heritage: Pradillo has preserved three suspended household ovens and one vertical household oven. The Ruta de los hornos colgados showcases examples of vernacular architecture and recalls the domestic tradition of baking bread in these ovens. This topic thus leads from an individual structure to an everyday practice connected with local architecture.
The Iglesia de San MartĂn combines a Baroque section with a section dating from the 18th century. Above the RĂo Iregua stands the Ermita del Villar, a chapel built in 1760, with Baroque carvings and paintings. Both buildings offer different ways to explore Pradillo’s religious architecture: the church’s combination of two sections, and the chapel’s date and furnishings.
Almazuelas and Festivals
El HĂłrreo de Pradillo houses a permanent exhibition of Almazuelas. The Oficina de Turismo de Cameros is also located there, next to the Iglesia de San MartĂn. Its information services include specialist advice on rural tourism, mountain excursions, hiking, and outdoor sports activities. Check the latest information about the exhibition and the office’s opening hours before your visit.
Pradillo’s Almazuelas Colgadas have been recognized as a Fiesta de InterĂ©s TurĂstico de La Rioja. Another regular highlight of the year is the festival in honor of the Virgen del Villar, the town’s patron saint: it takes place on the last weekend of August and includes a dance performed by young people from Pradillo. The program may vary from year to year.
Forest, River and Trails
The RĂo Iregua flows through Pradillo, forming a riverside forest. The natural area is mostly forested; the tree species mentioned include beech, oak, and holm oak, as well as scrubland. El Prado adds to this landscape as a shady place to rest and relax, with chestnut and lime trees.
A notable individual tree is the Roble Gordo, also known as the Roble de Las Palomas. It can be reached on foot from Pradillo in about half an hour and is listed in La Rioja’s inventory of notable trees. The marked trail to the tree starts at the granja de Las Llanas on the N-111 in the direction of Logroño; this starting point is less than two kilometers from Pradillo. The approximate walking time and the location of the trailhead are two distinct points of reference.
Several routes offer further perspectives on the area. The Ruta en BTT: Valle del Iregua is 23.5 kilometers long and rated as moderate; a trail through the forest descends to Pradillo. The Pradillo–Villanueva route passes through oak stands and old farmland, then crosses a large 18th-century bridge to Pradillo. It also extends into the Sierras de Demanda, Urbión, Cebollera y Cameros Natura 2000 area.
The alternative Stage 2a starts at the bridge in Almarza and runs parallel to the RĂo Iregua through Pradillo and Villanueva de Cameros. Near Pradillo, a four-kilometer route branches off to Montemediano. Check trail conditions and safety information before hiking.
