Cirueña offers several reasons to visit: church architecture and local history, recurring religious festivals, routes and oak landscapes, as well as golf. When looking for a hotel in Cirueña, your reason for travelling is a useful starting point. Would you mainly like to explore the history of its buildings, take a pilgrimage into account when planning your trip, or focus on the town’s connection with golf?

Churches and history in Cirueña

The parish church of San Andrés combines an older foundation with a later church building: the current building was erected in 1965 on the foundations of a pre-Romanesque temple dating from the 10th century. The presbytery contains a Baroque altarpiece from the first half of the 17th century. San Andrés thus brings together different historical layers. An altarpiece is an architectural structure behind the altar.

The Ermita de la Virgen de los Remedios is also part of the town’s architectural character. The building was recently rebuilt. It is made of rubble masonry and has a single-nave layout with four bays and a rectangular chancel. A bay is a section that divides the nave; the four bays provide a specific description of its lengthwise structure.

Alongside its church buildings, Cirueña’s history also includes a communal agricultural arrangement. The collective agricultural charter of Cirueña was granted on 30 November 972 and is considered the oldest of its kind in La Rioja.

Festivals and pilgrimages throughout the year

On the first weekend of September, Cirueña celebrates the festival of the Virgen de los Remedios and Día de Gracias. Events include a sung Mass and a procession, as well as games for children and adults, communal meals and dancing. If you would like to travel for this occasion, check the dates for the year of your trip.

Another tradition is the pilgrimage from Cirueña to the Monasterio de Valvanera on the third weekend of June. A large part of the population takes part. Unlike the September festival, which brings together several named activities, the June event centres on the communal journey to the monastery.

The Camino de Santiago, routes and oak landscapes

The Camino de Santiago passes through Cirueña on its way towards Santo Domingo de la Calzada. At Cerro Plaza, pilgrims can rest their feet at a jet fountain and take a break on ergonomic benches overlooking the cereal fields and oak landscape. The Variante de Cirueña is a 5.7-kilometre linear route.

The landscape can also be enjoyed in different places. Barranco de Valdián has a dense oak forest, as well as tables and wooden benches for a peaceful stop and a meal. In the landscape along the Camino de Santiago, Dehesa de Cirueña is characterised by well-developed oak trees.

Golf and getting there

For golf enthusiasts, the Rioja Alta Golf Club in Cirueña has an 18-hole, par-72 course and a Pitch & Putt course approved by the RFEG.

Two road connections are useful for planning your route: the LR-204 connects Cirueña with Santo Domingo de la Calzada, while the LR-236 links the town to the N-120 national road between Logroño and Burgos. These road connections help you orient your journey towards Santo Domingo or the N-120.
