Cervera Del Río Alhama offers travelers several ways to choose it as a destination: medieval buildings, sacred art, traces of traditional crafts and trails through the landscape along the Río Alhama. Dinosaur tracks and recurring festivals also feature among the things you can discover locally. If you are looking for hotels for this trip, first consider whether cultural sites, longer hikes or an event date will shape your stay. The following distinctions can help you find the right fit in Cervera based on your interests.

Medieval buildings and sacred art

The remains of the medieval Castillo medieval y peña del castillo date from the 13th and 14th centuries. Medieval frescoes can be viewed today at the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Virgen del Monte. Check the visiting arrangements before your visit. The Iglesia de San Gil was built in 1123 by order of Alfonso I el Batallador. The main altarpiece and the organ in the gallery at the Iglesia de Santa Ana are considered works of art. The town's cultural and historical attractions therefore range from medieval remains and frescoes to church furnishings.

Traces of the past and traditional crafts

In the San Miguel district stands the Nevera de San Miguel, a building constructed in the 16th century in the Mudéjar style. It was used to collect and store snow during the winter. The Yacimiento de las Navillas was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Historic Site” category on June 23, 2000. Its 305 dinosaur tracks form a total of 131 trackways made by carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs. The two figures describe different aspects of the site: individual tracks and the trackways they make up.

Cervera alpargatas also have a long history: as early as the 19th century, they crossed regional and international borders. The Museo de la Alpargata is a museum of ethnography and anthropology. It is open to the public, but access is restricted; groups must book in advance. Check the current visiting arrangements before planning your visit.

Hiking trails and different route lengths

The Camino Verde del Alhama is about 12 kilometers long and runs parallel to the banks of the Río Alhama. Between rocky cliffs where numerous vultures nest, it passes ethnographic and archaeological sites such as the Yacimiento de Contrebia Leukade. Its surface is suitable for walkers and cyclists. The Pozo Verde is a waterfall on the Río Alhama, reached from Cervera along the Camino Verde in the direction of Aguilar. Check trail conditions before setting out.

There are two sections of the GR-93 that start in Cervera: 24 kilometers toward Cornago and 12 kilometers toward Valverde. The section to Valverde follows paths between vineyards and almond trees. Stage 11, “Cervera del Río Alhama-Valverde,” is estimated at 11.66 kilometers and three hours. These figures give you an idea of the route length and, for this stage, an estimate of the time required. Check trail conditions before your hike.

Landscape and stargazing

The entire municipality lies within the Biosphere Reserve of the Leza, Jubera, Cidacos and Alhama valleys, internationally recognized by UNESCO. In Cervera, the Valle del Alhama also has a stargazing site near the Ermita de la Soledad. If you plan to visit, check local access arrangements in advance.

Festivals and local traditions

The patron saint festivities take place every year from July 24 to 28 and from August 29 to September 3. Important festival days are July 26, in honor of the patron saint Santa Ana, and September 1, in honor of San Gil. La Gaita refers both to Cervera's traditional dance and to the music played by dulzaineros to accompany it. Garrapiteo is a food, wine and cultural festival held on the last weekend of September in Plaza de San Gil and Barranco Tollo. Since individual programs may change, check the dates and program for the year of your trip.
