Alesón brings together several distinct points of interest for a stay: the Camino Francés, the Camino de Santiago and its landscape, the Parish Church of San Martín, and the annual events at Paseo La Florida. The Río Yalde, historic buildings and a traditional legend also help shape the area’s character.

The Camino and the Landscape

The Camino Francés runs along the boundaries between Huércanos and Alesón, and between Nájera and Alesón. Within the municipality of Alesón, the route crosses the bridge over the Río Yalde. These details refer to different geographical points: the boundary route associates the Camino with the neighboring municipalities, while the bridge is within the municipality. The Río Yalde also flows at the foot of Alesón.

A route along the Camino de Santiago leads from Alesón towards Nájera through vineyards, farmland and poplar groves. These three landscape features give this stretch a distinct character: vineyards, agricultural land and stands of poplar trees are all part of its surroundings.

San Martín and the Heritage of Alto de San Antón

The Parish Church of San Martín in Alesón dates from the 16th century. It has a single-nave layout, a transept and an octagonal apse. At the foot of the church stands an 18th-century tower. The architectural features can therefore be associated with distinct characteristics, while the two centuries distinguish the dates of the church and the tower.

Inside are Baroque depictions of the Immaculate Conception and a Plateresque high altarpiece featuring a Gothic depiction of the Virgin Mary. The altarpiece and the Marian figure it contains bring together two distinct styles; the Baroque depictions are also part of the church’s furnishings.

The ruins of the Hospital de San Antón lie within the municipality, on the northwest side of Alto de San Antón, near the Camino de Santiago between Ventosa and Alesón. The legend of the battle between Roldán and the giant Ferragut is associated with Poyo de Roldán on the same Alto. The Alto thus features in two different contexts: as the site of the hospital ruins and as the setting for a legend. These are distinct cultural points of interest for anyone interested in pilgrimage history and local lore.

Events at Paseo La Florida

Two annual events take place at Paseo La Florida: the Feria de Artesanía, featuring food and handicrafts, and Bodegas en la Calle, featuring food and wine. Food is part of both events; handicrafts feature at the Feria de Artesanía, while wine features at Bodegas en la Calle. This makes it easy to distinguish the focus of each event. Check the dates for the year of your visit.

Alesón also has a reservoir, swimming pools and a play area.
