Pedrazales lies on a hillside on the left bank of the Tera River. Its history and appearance are reflected in Casa del Priorato, the Church of Santa Eulalia and examples of traditional architecture. At the same time, a hiking route and a mountain biking route lead into the landscape around Lago de Sanabria Nature Park. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the cultural and landscape features separately: the buildings tell the story of the town, while the routes offer different activities and connections to the landscape.

Historic buildings and townscape

Casa del Priorato dates back to the 12th century and belonged to the monastery until the confiscation of church property. Its entrance façade features a Benedictine coat of arms carved in granite. This brings together a striking material detail and the building’s former connection to the monastery. The 12th-century origins and the end of its monastic ownership with the confiscation offer two distinct perspectives on the house’s history.

The Church of Santa Eulalia stands in the centre of Pedrazales on a small rise. A wall encloses its atrium and cemetery. The church therefore has two distinct spatial features: its elevated position and the walled complex of atrium and cemetery. Traditional building forms are also part of the town. Examples of traditional architecture have been preserved in Pedrazales; traditional outbuildings include haylofts, among others. They add buildings beyond the better-known historic structures to the picture of the town’s architecture.

Hiking, mountain biking and the landscape

The Pedrazales–Vigo de Sanabria hiking trail is located in Lago de Sanabria Nature Park and in the Segundera and Porto mountain ranges. The Puebla–Lago de Sanabria mountain biking route passes through Pedrazales and runs partly within the nature park, specifically in the municipality of Galende. When comparing the routes by activity and landscape, this distinction is useful: the hiking trail is linked to the mountain ranges mentioned, while the mountain biking route passes through Pedrazales and runs partly within the nature park.

The erratic boulders of Pedrazales offer another way to explore the history of the landscape. Glaciers transported the stones; when the ice melted, they were left behind. Their origins therefore differ clearly from the history of the buildings: here, the movement and subsequent melting of the ice explain how the boulders came to rest where they are.

Cultural traces and travel planning

A collection from 1969 documents bagpipe tunes played by Ceferino Espada, a bagpiper from Pedrazales. This musical heritage adds another dimension to the local culture alongside the buildings. Together, these different features show that Pedrazales is connected both with historic buildings and with musical tunes passed down through generations.

In Pedrazales, Sta. Eulalia is associated with the festival and tradition on 14 August. If this date matters for your trip, check the dates in advance. The La Andaluza de Pedrazales restaurant is located in Pedrazales de Sanabria. If you plan to eat there, check availability before your trip.
