Lubián is the fifth stage of the Sanabrés Way. From here, the route continues across the Portilla de La Canda into the province of Ourense and Galicia, leaving the province of Zamora behind. If you are planning your trip around the pilgrimage route, this stage position provides a specific reference point for your plans.

Pilgrimage route and getting there

Lubián has a pilgrims’ hostel where travelers on the route can rest. As operating details may change, check whether the hostel is available for your dates before you travel. The A-52 is the main road connection to Lubián. It links the A6 (Madrid–A Coruña) with Vigo and the Rías Baixas, passing through Ourense and places such as Xinzo de Limia and Verín.

Sanctuary and traditions

The Santuario de La Tuiza is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category; it was granted protected status in 1995. The Romería de La Tuiza, held every year on the last Sunday in September, is associated with the sanctuary. It includes a procession around the sanctuary. The traditional livestock fair has also changed over the years: today, the fair associated with the romería features crafts and regional products.

Buildings and history

O Cortello do Lobo is a traditional structure of vernacular architecture that was used to catch wolves. It was used to protect against wolf attacks, not to eradicate wolves. Its traditional function sets this structure apart from a facility whose sole purpose would have been to kill the animals.

The Castro de As Muradellas is about three kilometers from Lubián, by the Tuela River. A marked trail allows visitors to explore the site above the river, with trail markers and information boards along the route. As Muradellas has two walled enclosures. In front of them are ditches and rows of upright stones, which served as defensive systems. Those interested in the history of the site will find both specific directions and details about the layout of the archaeological site.

Cycling and landscape

Día de la Bicicleta was started in 1988 by the Amigos de la Bici collective and has been held continuously ever since. The program offers three routes for different groups: a 2-kilometer children’s route, a 10-kilometer family route, and a 20-kilometer adult route. The specific routes may change from one edition to the next, so check the route for the relevant edition before taking part.

Lubián lies on a mid-slope below the valley formed by the Pedro and Tuela rivers. The landscape around the village includes meadows, forests, riverbanks, and gorges carved out by the two rivers. Glacial valleys include Fraga da Osa; oak, birch, and chestnut trees, among others, grow in the area. These landscape features complement the cultural sites with a glimpse of the village’s surroundings.
