Gamones: Hiking on the GR 14 and local culture
Accommodation in Gamones
Gamones connects two different points of reference on the GR 14: one stage ends in the village, while the next begins there beside the church. Traditional facilities, buildings and annual events add culture and local history to the hiking options. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether Gamones is your destination on Stage 24 or your starting point towards Badilla.
Hiking on the GR 14
Stage 24 of the GR 14 connects Torregamones and Gamones, covers about 3 km and ends in the village. Before Gamones, it passes a corridor lined by a stone wall and large holm oaks; in the summer months, these provide welcome shade.
Stage 25 runs from Gamones to Badilla and begins beside the church. It is 8.2 km long and takes about two hours. The route follows the left bank of the Arroyo de la Palla through a riverside woodland of ash, willow and poplar trees, with a diverse shrub layer. Along the way, it passes the Molino Moralo.
By comparison, Gamones is the endpoint on the first route and the starting point on the second; the distances also differ considerably: about 3 km compared with 8.2 km. Stage 25 also has an approximate duration of two hours. This helps you decide whether to include the village in your itinerary as a destination or as a starting point towards Badilla.
Crafts, architecture and local history
In the centre of the village is a potro de hacer varas de arados, a structure for making plough handles. The moulds for these are carved into an outcrop of rock. The Fuente Vieja is a traditional fountain with an attached stone basin that was once used for washing clothes.
The Puente de la Avena is a simple example of the pragmatic building style of the Sayago region. A walk through the village centre focuses on civil architecture, offering a distinct point of interest alongside the hiking stages.
The parish church of the Immaculate Conception (Iglesia parroquial de la Purísima Concepción) has murals on the epistle side of the first bay of the nave, as well as a small scene on the intrados of the triumphal arch. The walls of the 17th-century chapel of Santa Olaya bear the earliest documented date associated with Gamones. Together, these buildings offer different starting points for exploring local history.
Festivals and landscape
On 25 April, Gamones celebrates the feast of San Marcos, which includes a pilgrimage to the Ermita de Santa Eulalia. On 13 June, Gamones holds a festival in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua. These two dates offer different opportunities to discover local traditions throughout the year.
The Parque Natural de los Arribes del Duero is among Gamones’s natural attractions. A ceramics workshop is also one of the local offerings, complementing the themes of crafts and local culture.
