Somaén – medieval town layout and routes
Accommodation in Somaén
In Somaén, a medieval town layout, monumental heritage and described routes offer distinct travel interests. When choosing a destination, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the town and its architectural history or also take routes and nature observations into account.
Townscape in the Barrio Alto
In the Barrio Alto, you can stroll along narrow, cobbled streets between reddish houses. Somaén preserves a medieval town layout, with manor houses and adobe houses. The historic impression is therefore shaped not only by individual buildings: the layout of the upper quarter and the different types of houses also define the townscape. If you are interested in historic townscapes, the relationship between the street pattern and the buildings offers a reason in its own right to spend time in the town centre.
Monumental heritage and architectural history
Somaén’s monumental heritage includes the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Visitación and the Ermita de la Soledad. The hermitage is on the edge of the town. A report from December 2025 mentions a nativity scene set up in the parish church with help from volunteers and describes it as part of a tradition that has been maintained for many years. If the nativity scene is important to your visit, check in advance whether it is currently on display and accessible.
The Castillo de Somaén was built in the 14th century on the orders of the Count of Medinaceli, using ashlar, lime and rubble stone. Today, only a long, narrow tower with a pentagonal ground plan remains of the castle. The two descriptions complement each other: “long, narrow” describes its proportions, while the pentagonal ground plan describes the tower’s shape when viewed from above. This links the historical information about the construction with the form of the part that remains today.
Routes through the gorge and countryside
The route through the Barranco del Avenales is classified as easy and follows a path marked as GR86. The old national road through the Jalón gorge offers a route for motor vehicles, on foot and by bicycle. These are different features to consider at the outset: for the Barranco route, the difficulty level and GR86 marking are specific points of reference; for the old road, the described modes of use are the key details. Birds of prey can occasionally be spotted in the Gargantas del Jalón. This adds a natural highlight alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions.
Mountain biking route descriptions
A report from 2020 describes a mountain biking route through the centre of Somaén and mentions houses on the hillside there. Another route description from 2020 outlines a mountain biking route that reaches Somaén via a track and partly follows the GR-86 Sendero Ibérico Soriano. The descriptions focus on different aspects: one places the route in the town, while the other mentions the track leading to Somaén and the section that follows the GR-86. You can weigh the details according to the route aspect that interests you.
