Lubia combines a landscape of valleys and pine forests with the architectural and settlement history of the surrounding area. The village lies in the valley of the Mazos River and is part of the Pinares Llanos area. Extensive planted pine forests define the flat, gently rolling landscape around Lubia. When planning your trip, both the character of the village and individual destinations nearby are worth considering.

Landscape and seasonal experiences

The pine forests of Lubia are suitable for mushroom picking. This activity depends on seasonal conditions that affect when picking is advisable. If mushrooms are an important part of your trip, take the season into account when planning. The surrounding terrain is flat and gently rolling; together with the Mazos Valley and the area’s connection to Pinares Llanos, this creates a landscape of forest, river valley and gentle relief.

There is also a specific route detail for walkers: Stage 3 of the GR-14 Senda del Duero in Soria runs along a stretch of just under four kilometres towards Lubia on the former N-111 national road from Soria to Medinaceli. Take care when walking on this section of road. Bear this note in mind when planning your route along the section mentioned.

Church and archaeological site

Lubia’s artistic heritage includes the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. This small masonry building has a single nave with two bays. Rib vaults, separated by a round-arched transverse arch, define its layout. A bay is a section of a church interior; this description therefore refers to a single-nave building whose interior is divided into two parts. Its architecture can thus be understood through its form and the layout of its interior.

Also near Lubia is Los Castillejos, a Celtiberian settlement dating from the 3rd to 2nd century BC. It is located in the area of Monte de las Matas de Lubia and is an archaeological point of interest in the surrounding area. The time separating the settlement from the village’s present-day appearance clearly distinguishes this site from the church: one relates to early settlement history, the other to Lubia’s artistic heritage.

Another destination nearby is the Ermita de la Virgen de Valverde in Granja de Valverde, six kilometres from Lubia. Together with Los Castillejos, the chapel broadens the view beyond the buildings in the village to places in the surrounding area.
