Discover Garray: Numancia and the Duero
Accommodation in Garray
Garray combines the history of Numancia with a striking river landscape. Numancia lies on the broad, elevated hill of La Muela in Garray. The Duero is to the west and the Merdancho to the southeast; the two rivers surround Numancia, forming natural trenches that provide isolation and protection. The location between the rivers and the elevated position are therefore part of the site’s historic character.
Numancia and the River Landscape
Numancia’s strategic location is linked to control of the ford across the Duero. Routes from the surrounding area toward the Ebro Valley converged at this ford. The connection with the river crossing and the routes adds another historical dimension to the landscape beyond the elevated hill.
The Aula Arqueológica is housed in Garray’s former schools. Two rooms present the Celtiberian and Roman worlds. These two cultural spheres are thus presented as separate themed areas, broadening the historical perspective on Numancia.
Buildings and Cultural History
Garray’s stone bridge has sixteen pointed arches and was built in the 16th century over earlier bridges. The number and shape of its arches give the structure a distinctive architectural feature, while its construction over earlier bridges adds another layer of history. The Ermita de los Santo Mártires is an example of late Romanesque architecture in the province of Soria. Garray therefore offers different architectural points of interest: the bridge, with its arch design and building history, and the Ermita’s late Romanesque style.
The cultural history also includes a theatrical reenactment of episodes from the Numantine Wars, which has been associated with Garray since 1999. The concept includes local residents taking part as performers. The International Week of Celtiberian Culture, “KELTIBEROI,” includes Celtiberian gastronomy days in August. As the specific program may vary, check the dates and details for your travel period in advance if you are planning your trip around it.
Activities on the Duero
Garray has a bathing area on the Duero. In addition, the 6 km Garray–Soria stretch is the section most frequently used by local kayakers. These are two distinct ways of using the river: a bathing area in Garray and a specifically defined kayaking route. Check river conditions and safety locally before planning a kayaking trip.
Plan Your Connection to Soria
A demand-responsive public transport service operated by the Regional Government of Castile and León serves, among other routes, the Garray–Soria route; seats must be reserved. Operating days and timetables may change, so it is advisable to check the latest timetable before travelling. The name Garray–Soria is also used for the 6 km kayaking section, but there it refers to a stretch of river, not the public transport route. If you use both details to plan your trip, note that they refer to different things.
