In Abejar, you can tailor your trip to different interests: circular trails lead to views of the Embalse de la Cuerda del Pozo or follow a drovers’ road still used by livestock. Pine forests, buildings and local events offer more points of interest. When planning, you can decide whether to focus your stay on outdoor activities, architecture or a festival.

Compare circular trails and stages

“El Navazo” is a six-kilometre circular trail within the municipality of Abejar. It begins in the area known as “El Molimiento” and leads to Alto de la Negraila, from where the Embalse de la Cuerda del Pozo can be seen. “La Solana” is also a circular trail; it is eight kilometres long and begins in the “La Horca” neighbourhood, which belongs to Abejar. La Solana is therefore two kilometres longer than El Navazo, and their starting areas also differ. One section of La Solana follows part of the Cañada Real Occidental Soriana, which is still used by livestock from the village. The two trails thus differ not only in length, but also in the local features highlighted in their descriptions.

Another route is the Abejar–Soria stage of the Camino Natural Santander-Mediterráneo. It starts at the former Abejar railway station, which was a third-class station. There is also a rest area at Abejar next to kilometre marker 0. Unlike the two circular trails, this route is named as a stage to Soria. The former railway station and rest area give this section of the route its own starting point among the walking options.

The landscape around Abejar

Pine forests surround Abejar. South of the village, the Sabinar extends across the Sierra de Cabrejas. Along the Camino Natural stage, the Sierra de Cabrejas lies to the right; as the “Sabinares Sierra de Cabrejas” Special Conservation Area, it is included in the Natura 2000 network. From the Atalaya viewpoint in Abejar, you can see the Sierras de Cebollera and Urbión. These named landscape features range from the forest around the village and the Sabinar to the mountain views from the viewpoint.

Architecture and churches

Abejar’s traditional architecture includes ashlar buildings and conical chimneys, typical of Pinariego architecture. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista is one of the most representative examples of Sorian Gothic architecture. It has three naves and a Romanesque baptismal font: the Gothic classification describes the church’s significance, while the number of naves and the baptismal font identify specific features of the building.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Camino can also be identified by its architectural form. It is an 18th-century single-nave church with a cruciform floor plan. “Single-nave” describes a church with one nave; the floor plan describes the shape of the building when viewed from above. Together with the information about San Juan Bautista, these details offer different architectural points of reference: here, the Gothic classification and a Romanesque baptismal font; there, a single-nave layout and a cruciform floor plan.

La Barrosa and the truffle fair

La Barrosa is a ritual rooted in mythological and carnival traditions, involving the whole village. Its main characters include La Barrosa and two Barroseros. On 12 February 2025, the Fiesta de la Barrosa in Abejar was recognised as a festival of tourist interest in Castilla y León. It is celebrated on the first Saturday after Shrove Tuesday. If you want to plan your trip around the Fiesta, check the date for the relevant year in advance.

The Feria de la Trufa de Soria, held in Abejar, offers a different theme. It is the only single-product fair in Castilla y León specialising in truffles. Since 2003, it has been one of Soria’s established winter events; its first edition was held in Abejar. The fair attracts exhibitors, restaurateurs, chefs, companies specialising in mycology-related preserves, and the general public. Mycology also plays an important role in tourism in the area around Abejar. Among the mushrooms found there are porcini, níscalos and king oyster mushrooms. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.
