Saucelle: Viewpoints and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Saucelle
Things to do in Saucelle include taking in views of river landscapes, observing nature along the trails and attending the patron saint festival of San Lorenzo. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay. The viewpoints offer different vistas, while the trails range from a circular route just over a kilometre long to a several-hour stage of the GR-14. This lets you plan your trip according to whether you are mainly interested in views, hiking or experiencing a festival.
Two viewpoints, two river vistas
The Mirador del Salto de Saucelle is on the road connecting Saucelle with Salto de Saucelle. The viewpoint has seating, explanatory landscape murals and an area suitable for parking cars. From there, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the valley where the Huebra flows into the Duero.
The Picón del Moro offers a different view. The viewpoint is about six kilometres from the village, on the road that descends from Saucelle to Salto. It consists of a large balcony on a granite rocky outcrop. From here, you can look out over the Duero between the Saucelle Dam and the La Barca de Vilvestre landing. The two viewpoints therefore differ in their orientation: from the Mirador del Salto, you can see the confluence of the Huebra and the Duero, while the Picón del Moro looks out over the river stretch between the dam and the landing.
Walking trails for different time budgets
The Las Lavanderas botanical and ornithological circular trail is just over a kilometre long and follows narrow, easy paths. An interpretive audio recording explains local plant and bird species. Its length, terrain and audio guide give the route a clear focus on nature watching, without making it equivalent to a longer hiking stage.
Birdwatching is also a feature of the accessible Mirador de Las Janas. The viewpoint is 1,800 metres from the start of the Las Lavanderas trail and has road access and a car park.
The Senda del Duero (GR-14) passes through Saucelle on its way from Mieza and Vilvestre, and continues towards Lumbrales. The stage from Saucelle to Hinojosa de Duero is 21 kilometres long and takes about four hours and 50 minutes. This makes it possible to compare the short Las Lavanderas circular trail with a much longer hiking plan. If you want hiking to be the focus of your trip, the stage’s length and estimated duration provide a concrete guide for planning your day.
San Lorenzo: patron saint festival in August
On 10 August, Saucelle celebrates a patron saint festival in honour of its patron, San Lorenzo, which usually lasts about five days. The festival includes bull runs, bullfights, dances, sporting and cultural activities, and a procession in honour of the saint. Individual events may vary from year to year. If you are planning to travel specifically for the patron saint festival, check the dates and programme in advance so you can plan your stay around the festival days you want to attend.
