Vidrieros lies at the foot of Curavacas, whose summit is given as 2,520 metres. The village is at the end of the Valle de Pineda: the valley stretches from Laguna de Fuentes Carrionas to Vidrieros and forms the upper catchment of the Carrión. The Valle de Pineda brings together glacial origins, distinctive geology and exceptionally well-preserved biodiversity. Trails lead upstream from Vidrieros into the valley, giving your stay a clear landscape setting.

Getting there and finding your way

Vidrieros can be reached via the road between Cervera de Pisuerga and Guardo, known as the Ruta de los Pantanos. At Triollo, the road to Vidrieros branches off. These place names provide specific directions for the journey. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Hike to Pozo Curavacas

The hiking route from Vidrieros to Pozo Curavacas is listed as 19 kilometres each way, with an estimated duration of 6 hours and 30 minutes and 500 metres of elevation gain. From Vidrieros, it follows the Carrión upstream through the Valle de Pineda. A footpath runs alongside the Arroyo del Ves and climbs between the cascades to the lake. The cascades are called Escaleras del Ves; Pozo Curavacas is a lake of glacial origin.

On this route, the river, stream and waterfalls give way to the lake at the destination. The distance, estimated duration and elevation gain help you assess the scope of the hike. Trail conditions may vary; check the route conditions before setting out. Alternatively, the access to Pozo Curavacas through the Valle de Pineda is 18 kilometres from Vidrieros. A track is passable by four-wheel-drive vehicles as far as the vicinity of the lake; check conditions before driving.

Cycling through the Valle de Pineda

The cycling route “El Carrión salvaje – Valle de Pineda” starts and finishes at the car park in Vidrieros. It initially follows the right bank of the Carrión upstream. At the Estrecho, it reaches a gorge carved open by the glacier and widened by the river’s erosion. The route then climbs through the Vega de los Cantos to a junction. From there, trails lead to Pozo Curavacas, Laguna de Fuentes Carrionas and the passes of Riofrío. The starting point, endpoint and route provide a different way to orient yourself than the hiking details.

Historic traces in the village and valley

A route ran above Vidrieros and was later used as a royal road and livestock droving route. It connected the valley with Liébana via the Valle de Arauz. In the 12th century, the settlement stood beside the newly built church of San Martín de Tours. The entrance portal of the church of San Martín has Gothic features with Romanesque influences and probably dates from the second half of the 13th century.

A cross of Celtic origin is kept in the village chapel. The old mill in Vidrieros is an ethnographic building that illustrates a former craft and ways of life from the past. The shepherds’ huts and traditional grazing huts scattered across the meadows of the Valle de Pineda are also among the landscape’s defining details.

If you are looking for a hotel in Vidrieros, the planned focus of your trip can help you find your bearings: the hike to Pozo Curavacas, the cycling route through the valley, or the historic traces in the village. This makes it possible to get a sense of Vidrieros through specific destinations rather than just general mountain and nature themes.
