Palencia offers Gothic architecture, museums, distinctive cityscapes and routes along the Río Carrión and the Canal de Castilla. When looking for a hotel in Palencia, you can first decide whether cultural sites and architecture or routes by the water will be the main focus of your stay. The city’s different sides offer concrete points of reference to help you decide.

Cathedral and museums

The Catedral de San Antolín is a Gothic religious building. Inside, you can see works by El Greco, Alonso Berruguete and Zurbarán. The architecture and artworks together shape this cultural highlight of Palencia. The Museo Catedralicio is located in the cathedral’s antechamber and chapter house. Its collection includes paintings, sculptures, gold and silver objects, tapestries and textiles from various periods and styles. Here you can encounter a range of art forms, not just paintings.

The Fundación Díaz Caneja offers a different focus: this contemporary art museum houses a large part of the work of the painter Díaz-Caneja. The institution includes spaces for its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, a library, an auditorium and workshop rooms. The foundation also organizes cultural activities; if you are planning around a particular date, check the latest information.

The Museo de Palencia is located in the Casa del Cordón. The building was constructed in the first half of the 16th century and is the only surviving civil building from that period in the city. Using archaeological remains, the museum explores the region’s prehistoric, Celtiberian, Roman and medieval heritage. Its collection thus offers a broad chronological perspective on the history of the region.

Architecture and cityscapes

The Iglesia de San Miguel was remodeled in the Gothic style in the 13th century. Its features include a crenellated bell tower, three naves and a transept. The traditional Bautizo del Niño at the church is celebrated on January 1. This building thus brings architecture together with a custom firmly rooted in the annual calendar.

The Cristo del Otero is a 21-meter-high sculpture and a defining symbol of the city. At its base, a hermitage houses the Centro de Interpretación Victorio Macho. Projects, plans, sketches, busts and models by the sculptor are displayed there. The viewpoint by the Cristo del Otero offers panoramic views of Palencia. Both the striking sculpture and the view of the city are central to getting your bearings in the cityscape.

Calle Mayor is more than 900 meters long. Arcades with 199 columns line one side of the street. Its length and the one-sided row of arcades are characteristic features of this urban thoroughfare and offer a concrete point of reference for taking in Palencia’s streetscape.

Routes along the Río Carrión and the Canal de Castilla

Palencia has an area along the banks of the Río Carrión equipped for sports activities. You can go running, mountain biking and Nordic walking there. The marked Ruta Entre Puentes is 2 kilometers long and takes approximately 30 minutes. The Ruta de la Vía Verde del Tren Burra offers a different scale: it is a 29.8-kilometer walking and cycling route that starts at the Dársena del Canal de Castilla. Comparing their lengths and stated durations can help you plan for these two routes in different ways. As route details may change, check them before setting out.

The Canal de Castilla passes through the municipality of Palencia. The capital’s Dársena, the double lock near Viñalta and the Puente de las Arcas are located there. The Dársena del Canal de Castilla is also a starting point for walks along the towpaths. Alongside the designated routes, walks by the canal are therefore another option to consider.

Getting here and finding your way
