Herrera de Valdecañas lies on the slope of a high plateau above the Arlanzón Valley. Its architectural history, landscape and a circular route through the Cerrato offer different starting points for your trip. Depending on whether you are mainly interested in the churches, the surrounding area or wine, your stay will take a different shape.

Location, Getting There and Landscape

Two roads lead to Herrera de Valdecañas: one from Quintana del Puente and another from the junction with the A-62. You can take these access roads into account when planning your journey; check the current route and road conditions before setting off. The town’s landscape includes its position above the Arlanzón Valley and the high plateau. The surrounding area also includes the floodplains of the Arlanzón and Pisuerga rivers, as well as land used for agriculture. Natural stands of thyme are also found nearby.

Architectural History of Santa Cecilia

The Iglesia de Santa Cecilia stands on a slope in the highest part of Herrera de Valdecañas, just below the area of the town with the bodegas. Its original fabric dates from the 13th or 14th century; the church was altered in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1945. Two aspects can be distinguished through its location and construction phases: the church’s position in the upper part of the town and the changes that have shaped its architecture over several centuries.

The artworks inside also span different periods and forms. They include Baroque works, a 13th-century Gothic Christ, a Rococo work by José Pastrana, a 13th-century tomb and 16th-century sculptures. If you are interested in art history, this collection offers several specific points of reference, from Gothic art to Rococo. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios offers a different historical point of reference: it was built in 1577 and is the only one of the hermitages formerly mentioned in Herrera de Valdecañas that has survived.

The Hermitage and the Festival Calendar

The Virgen de los Remedios festival takes place on the second weekend of August. A San Isidro program from May 2025 also listed a procession with the saint: it took place on Thursday, May 15, after Mass at the hermitage. This event belongs to that dated listing; it does not establish a date for subsequent years.

Ruta Temática Cerrato and Other Interests

The Ruta Temática Cerrato is a 38-kilometer circular route through Herrera de Valdecañas, Hornillos de Cerrato and Valdecañas de Cerrato. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Its length and circular shape are useful reference points for planning, but they do not indicate how long the journey will take on foot or by bike. Along the route are distinctive hills, Mediterranean woodlands, pine and oak forests, and cultivated fields. This gives the route a different landscape focus from a visit centered mainly on the architectural history of the Iglesia de Santa Cecilia.

A digital tourist viewpoint showcases the municipality’s attractions and offers a 360-degree view of Herrera de Valdecañas. It complements the circular route with another way to get your bearings in the town: the viewpoint is digital, while the Ruta Temática Cerrato is a clearly defined route passing through three named towns.

Basileo is part of the local wine scene. The wine comes from a vineyard planted in Herrera de Valdecañas in 2005 and belongs to the D.O. Arlanza. This adds a specific product from the town to the historical and landscape-related aspects. Then compare the specific details of each hotel with your travel plans.
