Discover San Emiliano
Accommodation in San Emiliano
When planning a trip to San Emiliano, you can combine different interests: cultural heritage, mountain landscapes, hiking and an annual horse show. Each theme offers a different focus. In Riolago de Babia, the emphasis is on the village’s appearance and architectural history; the nature highlights focus on specific scenic spots and a longer hiking route. The time of year also matters, as the horse show takes place on a fixed date in August, while winter hikes are set against snow-covered heights.
Cultural Heritage and Events
In Riolago de Babia, the square and its surroundings are designated a cultural asset of cultural interest in the “Historic Ensemble” category. Riolago belongs to the municipality of San Emiliano in the province of León; the permanent designation was granted in 1995. The ensemble status draws attention to the square in relation to its surroundings, rather than focusing on a single building.
San Emiliano also has elegant manor houses, including the house of Don Pío. This offers a different cultural perspective: here, a named house is the focus as an example of elegant architecture. If you are interested in local history, these offer two distinct perspectives on the architectural heritage—the historic ensemble in Riolago and the manor houses in San Emiliano.
Another cultural highlight is the Casa del Parque de Babia y Luna. It is housed in the former residence of the Palacio de Quiñones, a 16th-century cultural monument. The exhibition “Los Secretos de Babia y Luna” presents the distinctive features of the park’s various areas. At the Casa del Parque, a historic building and an exhibition about the landscape come together; its location should be considered separately from the reference to Riolago.
On the last Sunday in August, San Emiliano hosts the Hispano-Breton Horse Competition and Show. The event combines a competition and an exhibition, offering a specific date to plan your trip around. If you would like to attend, check the event dates before travelling.
Mountain Landscapes and Natural Highlights
The Babia y Luna Natural Park represents the ecosystems of the Cantabrian Mountains. One specific viewpoint is Puerto de Ventana: at an elevation of 1,587 metres, it offers views of the Valle de San Emiliano and the Ubiña Massif. This landscape viewpoint takes in both the valley and the massif.
The Lago Chao, south of Riolago, offers a different natural setting. The lake lies in a glacial cirque enclosed by the Penouta cliffs and the summit of La Ferrera. It is also listed under code LE-03 in the Regional Catalogue of Wetlands of Special Interest. Unlike the viewpoint at Puerto de Ventana, the cirque and the surrounding cliffs and summit shape the landscape here.
Hiking and Seasonal Planning
The Las Naves–El Panazal hiking route passes through the pastures of Puerto de Pinos and the Arroyo del Puerto valley. If you do not intend to walk the entire route back, plan your return transport in advance. The return journey should therefore be part of your planning from the outset. The landscape features described—pastures and the valley—offer distinctive landmarks along the route.
At Puerto de Ventana, the snow-covered heights provide a setting for winter hikes. This is a different focus from planning the long Las Naves–El Panazal route: there, the main consideration is return transport; here, it is hiking in a winter mountain landscape. When choosing when to travel, you can also take the August date of the horse show into account and weigh up culture, scenery and hiking according to your interests.
