Riaño offers several starting points for planning a trip: the landscapes of the Montaña de Riaño shaped by the Embalse, buildings with histories of their own, and a range of routes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Riaño, you can consider whether you’re particularly interested in landscape history, architecture, hiking or an annual event. The following topics give you an overview of these different sides of the area.

Landscape and history of the Embalse

The landscapes known as the Fiordos Leoneses are in the Montaña de Riaño. Their formation is linked to the Embalse de Riaño: when it was created, deep mountain valleys and sheer rock faces were flooded. The landscape therefore also tells the story of how the reservoir shaped the mountains. Those interested in this development will find a tangible way here to understand the significance of the Embalse, beyond its function as a body of water.

Routes and hiking options

Several of the routes described have different starting-point or connection details. The Subida al Pico Gilbo can begin in Riaño; to do so, cross the viaduct on foot. Another starting option is the car park at the end of the viaduct, where the route begins. The Senda Riaño - Riaño starts at the entrance to the town from the N-621 national road. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

The PR-LE 52 Collado El Baile hiking trail connects at Prado de la Collada with a variant from Las Viescas and Riaño. The Camino de Santiago also passes through Riaño, along the so-called Ruta Vadiniense. These details describe different trails and connections; they should not be taken as a single unified route. On trips by excursion boat on the Embalse de Riaño, passengers can disembark at certain points along the shore to start hikes, and are then brought back to the landing stage in Riaño. If you’d like to combine a boat trip with a hike, check the timetable before making plans.

Relocated churches and architectural history

The Iglesia parroquial de Santa Águeda was formerly the church of San Martín in Pedrosa del Rey and was moved stone by stone. Its distinctive features include a 16th-century tower and a replica of a Romanesque portal at the main entrance. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario was also moved stone by stone, from La Puerta, which was flooded by the Embalse. Its chancel dates from the 13th or 14th century. The churches therefore reflect different periods of construction and local histories: for Santa Águeda, its former location and tower are important points of reference; for Nuestra Señora del Rosario, they are its flooded place of origin and medieval chancel.

Another architectural stop is the Corro de Aluches. This futuristic building was constructed in the last decade of the 20th century to a design by architect Félix Compadre. Together with the two churches, it illustrates how varied Riaño’s architectural history is, from relocated historic buildings to a more recent structure.

Reconstructions and the Feria de Riaño

The Museo Etnográfico de Riaño features reconstructions of a smokehouse, a traditional blacksmith’s forge and a local school. These three examples offer distinct, tangible points of reference for exploring historical aspects of everyday life and work: home, craft and school. Those interested in local history as well as the landscape can connect this focus with the relocated churches and their architectural history.

The Feria de Riaño takes place every year on the first Saturday after 2 November. If you’d like to plan your trip around the Feria, use this date rule as a guide and check the programme for the relevant date. This allows you to consider the recurring festival as a reason for a trip in its own right, without conflating it with the year-round points of interest: landscapes, architecture and routes.
