In Orellán, the landscape of Las Médulas meets its history. The Mirador de Orellán is located in the village and offers panoramic views of the ravines and rock pinnacles of Las Médulas. The Galería de Orellán can be accessed from this viewpoint. The viewpoint and gallery are among the visitor sites of Las Médulas, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. This makes it possible to plan your visit around specific natural and cultural heritage sites.

Mirador de Orellán and Access

The viewpoint can be reached from Orellán via a road that is easily accessible by car. There is a large parking lot at the start of the climb; from there, access is on foot. The routes to the viewpoints are also well signposted. For planning purposes, you can think of the journey and the walk as two consecutive stages: first, drive along the accessible road, then walk from the parking lot to the viewpoint. This is also the reference point for accessing the Galería de Orellán. If you plan to visit both places, the same named landmark will guide you on the drive and at the start of your gallery visit.

Galería de Orellán

The path through the Galería de Orellán is about 100 meters long and leads to a balcony in a vertical cut in the mountain. The gallery passage is therefore spatially distinct from the panoramic views of the ravines and rock pinnacles from the viewpoint. An entrance ticket must be purchased in advance. Plan for this before your visit; the gallery visit is a separate part of your itinerary from your time at the viewpoint.

Trails associated with Orellán and Las Médulas

The Senda de los Conventos runs from Mirador de Orellán – La Frisga to Orellán. The Senda Perimetral is located in the Las Médulas Natural Monument. The trails are characterized by different geographical reference points: the endpoints are named for the Senda de los Conventos, while the location within the natural monument is given for the Senda Perimetral. The first route is thus defined by its endpoints, while the second is identified by its setting.

The archaeological history of Orellán

The Asentamiento metalúrgico de Orellán was founded under Roman rule and inhabited by indigenous people who worked in the mining facilities. The Ruta de Los Poblados includes a visit to this Roman settlement, which was associated with mining, metallurgy, and agricultural production in Las Médulas. These activities give the settlement a broader historical context than mining alone. When choosing what to visit, this offers a different focus from the Mirador: the settlement centers on habitation and work, while the viewpoint highlights the landscape.

The dates refer to different events: Las Médulas was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997; the settlement was founded during the period of Roman rule. You can therefore encounter both the later recognition of the cultural heritage and the much older history of settlement.
