Accommodation in Las Médulas
Las Médulas is characterized by a Roman hydraulic gold-mining landscape. Steep cuts and extensive spoil heaps are visible on the mountain slopes. This means that archaeological traces in the landscape, viewpoints and trails are central to planning your trip.
Roman mining and visible traces
The Las Médulas Archaeological Zone covers more than 2,000 hectares. It includes mines, spoil heaps, dams and hydraulic canals. The central open-pit mine covers more than 10 square kilometers; the hydraulic canal and water-conveyance system of Las Médulas extended for at least 100 kilometers. These figures show different aspects of the mining landscape: extraction in the terrain and an extensive system for managing water.
The Mirador de Reirigo offers the most comprehensive view of Roman mining. From there, you can see the famous reddish cuts, scree ridges, canals for draining spoil and ponds such as Lago Sumido. The viewpoint brings together several features of the landscape in a single view: traces of mining and the changes it caused.
Walking and cycling trails
The Senda de Las Valiñas is a circular route starting from the village of Las Médulas, which you can walk or cycle. From Las Médulas, you can join the Senda de Reirigo via the Senda de Las Valiñas. This lets you distinguish between a circular route designed for both modes of travel and access to another hiking trail. Check the current condition of the route before your trip.
For a cycling route with a stated distance and difficulty, the Ruta cicloturista – Monumento Natural de Las Médulas offers specific guidelines: it is 17.7 kilometers long and of moderate difficulty. Take the 17.7-kilometer distance and moderate difficulty of this cycling route into account when planning your ride. If you include different routes in your plans, it is therefore useful to consider each route's details separately.
Natural Monument and Lago de Carucedo
Las Médulas is designated a Natural Monument. Its Mediterranean vegetation includes holm oaks, cork oaks, strawberry trees, oaks and, above all, chestnut trees. Alongside the mining-shaped landscape, the plant life is also a distinct part of the natural environment.
Lago de Carucedo plays an important role in bird conservation in Las Médulas because of its significance for waterbirds. Kayaking is possible on the lake, and there are rental locations nearby for suitable equipment. Since the availability of activities and rentals may change, check the latest information before making plans.
Other places in the cultural area
The Ruta de Los Poblados includes a visit to the metallurgical settlement of Orellán. It is outside the village of Las Médulas but forms part of the associated cultural and natural area. The Roman settlement is linked to mining, metallurgy and agricultural production in Las Médulas. A visit adds to the view of the mining traces by including a place where these other aspects of life and work came together.
The Domus Romana de Pedreiras de Lago is located in Lago de Carucedo, not in the village of Las Médulas. It lies on the shore of Lago de Carucedo and is part of the Las Médulas cultural area. The domus was probably the central administrative and organizational building for the Roman gold mines. A 1.50-meter-wide accessible path made of concrete slabs allows visitors to walk around the site. A footbridge crosses the remains to a small pavilion that protects a room with remnants of wall paintings.
Planning your visit
The Casa del Parque de Las Médulas provides an overview of the Natural Monument, information about visiting options and areas of interest, as well as audiovisual resources and materials to help plan your visit. Since visitor services may change, it is worth checking the latest information before planning your visits.
The route to Cuevona begins on a paved stretch, followed by a 100-meter section of compacted earth on a slope. Trail conditions may change following maintenance or weather events. Check the current trail conditions before your visit.
