Igüeña between mountain landscapes and mining history
Accommodation in Igüeña
The municipality of Igüeña combines mountain landscapes with a visible mining and traditional heritage. The places and topics below show what the municipality has to offer as you plan your trip.
Mountain landscapes, river and wildlife
Pico Catoute stands 2,117 metres high and is considered the highest peak in El Bierzo. Routes to this summit start in nearby Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano. The municipality’s various mountain ranges are also home to brañas (traditional mountain pastures) and native plants such as yew, birch, rowan and juniper. Mountain wildlife includes capercaillies, roe deer, red deer, genets, wolves and stoats; a bear is also occasionally seen.
Families of otters can be spotted along the Río Boeza. The Playa fluvial de Igüeña is also located by the river. This gives you a nature spot along the Río Boeza and another named place on the same river to choose from when planning your trip.
Mining history and traditional architecture
Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano lies within the municipality of Igüeña and has been protected as a Site of Cultural Interest in the “Historic Ensemble” category since Decree 243/1994 of 10 November 1994. The nearby village is also home to a medieval bridge over the Río Boeza. Its protected status and the bridge offer two distinct points of historical interest.
East of the village of Igüeña lie the Torcas, in intensely red clay soil, where traces of excavations remain. Remains bearing evidence of gold mining can also be found in various parts of the municipality. In several villages in the municipality, including Igüeña, murals are dedicated to the mining history and traditions of the comarca.
Traditional shepherds’ huts also tell the story of life in the mountains. They have been built in the municipality since time immemorial to protect shepherds from bad weather. Their distinctive character makes the huts an additional tourist attraction. Igüeña’s cultural history can therefore be explored not only through mining, but also through traditional architecture.
Routes and activities in the municipality
The municipality’s terrain offers mountain biking and e-bike routes along forest tracks and trails. They wind through forests, follow former mining routes and lead to viewpoints amid the natural scenery. Another activity is the permanent trial course in Pobladura de las Regueras, located in the village of Igüeña in the province of León.
The Camino Olvidado also connects places in the municipality: one stage passes through Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano on its way to Igüeña.
