Galleguillos de Campos: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Galleguillos de Campos
Galleguillos de Campos combines cultural and historical connections with a route where birdwatching is also possible. The town’s history includes a birthplace with a commemorative plaque, a church and a hermitage; archaeological finds add to the picture. The Ruta de las Lanzas runs from Sahagún to the Azud de Galleguillos. Whether you are particularly interested in the town’s history, an easy route on foot or by bicycle, or the patron saint festivals, these themes and dates give your trip different focuses.
Church, Hermitage and Local History
The architect Juan CrisĂłstomo Torbado was born in Galleguillos de Campos on January 28, 1867. A commemorative plaque is displayed at his birthplace. This biographical connection also links the town to the history of an architect; the birthplace and plaque are the tangible points of interest.
The church, dedicated to Salvador, dates from the 14th century. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la PorterĂa was built in 1897 on the site where Fray Luis de San JosĂ© was born. This brings together two distinct historical periods: a medieval church and a late-19th-century hermitage whose location is associated with the birth of Fray Luis de San JosĂ©.
Archaeological finds are also part of the history of Galleguillos de Campos. Excavations uncovered a Roman necropolis there. In 2018, reports covered archaeological work that unearthed a 45-meter section of a previously unknown Roman road. In the Cañada Zamorana area, the Ruta de las Lanzas passes near the Roman necropolis and the old Roman road.
Ruta de las Lanzas and Azud de Galleguillos
The Ruta de las Lanzas runs from SahagĂşn to the Azud de Galleguillos and covers 8.7 kilometers one way. It is described as an easy route and can be done on foot or by bicycle. When planning, both the stated difficulty and the direction covered by the distance are important: the 8.7 kilometers refer to the route to the Azud, not to a stated round-trip distance.
Birdwatching is possible along the route, particularly at the Azud de Galleguillos. The Azud was completed in 1996. If you are interested in birds, the area at the Azud is the specifically highlighted observation point; birdwatching is also a distinct nature-focused aspect of the route.
Patron Saint Festivals and Travel Dates
A festival in honor of San Salvador is held in Galleguillos de Campos on August 6. The festival in honor of Nuestra Señora de la PorterĂa falls on a variable date between September 8 and 15. The two celebrations therefore differ both in whom they honor and in their timing: August 6 is specified for San Salvador, while the September festival takes place within a date range.
If you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the exact dates in advance, as the annual program may vary. You can choose from different travel themes: the historical connections around the church, hermitage and archaeological finds; the Ruta de las Lanzas, with birdwatching at the Azud; or a stay during one of the patron saint festivals.
