Discover Boñar: nature, trails and culture
Accommodation in Boñar
Boñar can be explored through a range of themes: routes lead to viewpoints and along the Porma, while squares, a church and a bridge provide historical landmarks. There is also a spring with a Roman inscription, the production of Nicanores de Boñar, and destinations in the surrounding area. If you’re planning a hotel stay, these highlights can help you narrow down your travel plans for Boñar.
Routes between viewpoints and the river
The Los 4 puntos cardinales hiking route leads to Peña Salona, at an altitude of 1,241 metres, and offers views of Boñar and the course of the Porma River. Its views and elevation make it different from routes whose landscape is defined primarily by the river and its riverside vegetation.
The PRC-LE 55 – Ascensión a Pico Cueto route follows the Porma from Soto de Boñar through a riverside forest. The trees named there include poplars, birches, cherry trees, ash trees and alders. From Pradera de la Jana, the same route offers views of the Picos de Europa and the Porma Reservoir. The route combines riverside woodland along the Porma with distant views of the Picos de Europa and the Porma Reservoir.
The PRC LE-56 – Por el río Porma also follows the river, passing riverside vegetation that includes poplars, cherry trees and birches. By contrast, the PRC-LE 57 – Las Ermitas passes through Mediterranean holm oak woodland with centuries-old trees. Visitors interested in these landscapes will find a range of highlights: the course of the Porma, viewpoints or the holm oak woodland.
Squares, buildings and history
Plaza del Negrillón brings together the parish church and the petrified tree after which the square is named. The parish church was built in the 17th century under the patronage of the Marqués de Astorga. This brings a historical connection together with a distinctive feature of the square.
The church’s tall bell tower houses a clock donated by the Marqués and a moving Maragato figure. A Maragato is a resident of the Maragatería; the figure strikes the bell. When looking at the tower, the clock, figure and bell strike are specific details to look out for. Another historic bridge is the Puente Viejo, also called the San Pedro Bridge. It dates from the 14th century.
Fuente de la Calda also combines historical and natural features: the spring bears a Roman inscription. Its water emerges at 26 °C, and the spring flows at 50 litres per second. The inscription, emergence temperature and flow rate each describe a different feature of the same spring.
Local production and a regular event
A branch of one family continues to make Nicanores de Boñar in Boñar using the original artisanal method. The original ingredients include butter, flour, eggs and sugar.
The Feria de Nuestra Señora del Pilar takes place in the municipality of Boñar on 12 October. If you’re planning to visit around this date, you can take it into account when planning your trip.
Destinations in the surrounding area
In the surrounding area, the Porma Reservoir offers a range of water sports, except motorized boating. The Junta de Castilla y León has also established a school for nautical sports there. The reservoir adds a focus on water sports to the riverside and woodland landscapes of the local routes.
The Parque Regional Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre can be reached from Boñar via the LE-331 towards San Isidro, as well as via the N-625 towards Cistierna and the N-621 towards Riaño.
