Solarana brings together a variety of themes for a stay, reflected in the town and its surroundings: a late Gothic church, historic buildings, museums, and traces of earlier uses of the landscape. Most of the houses in the town are built of stone. When choosing a hotel for your trip to Solarana, these different points of interest can help with your planning: you can explore architecture and local history, as well as archaeological topics and the landscape of the Sierra de Solarana.

Church and Historical Traces

The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a late Gothic church dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. It has three naves and ribbed vaults that define its spatial layout and architecture. The church was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1992. The construction period and year of designation therefore refer to two different points in history: the creation of the building and its later classification as a cultural asset.

Another religious building is the Capilla de los Angulo. It was built in 1607 as the funerary chapel of the Angulo family, who lived in the town. The former Rollo jurisdiccional in the west of Solarana dates from the 16th century. It is incomplete and has been substantially altered—a key distinction when comparing the town’s historic buildings. Fuente Untierma is also associated with traces of the past: remains of a Roman road that ran from Clunia have been preserved nearby.

Museums and Archaeological Topics

The provincial museum guide published in 2013 describes the Museo del Cómic y del Cine Mudo as a museum of comics and silent films. It is part of the Museos Vivos network and is located in a building owned by the municipality. If you plan to visit, please check access arrangements in advance. The same 2013 museum guide lists ceramics, remains of the Castro Celta, mining, and flora and fauna as subjects at the Centro de Interpretación del Monte y el Castro Celta. Its thematic focus differs significantly from that of the Museo del Cómic y del Cine Mudo.

The history of the Castro of Solarana can also be placed in context. It was a fortified settlement of the Vacceos and may have had as many as 2,000 inhabitants. This population figure should be understood as a possibility, not as a confirmed exact number. Together with the topics covered by the interpretation center, the site offers points of interest for travelers curious about archaeology and the natural surroundings, while the comic and silent-film museum offers a different cultural focus.

Landscape, Roman Times, and Festivals

In the Sierra de Solarana, the Encina Grande is associated with the preserved remains of old charcoal-burning sites. It thus points to an earlier use of the landscape for charcoal production. There was a thermal complex at Fuente Untierma in Roman times; the road remains there offer another connection to the Roman period. The two Roman-related topics are therefore located at the same named place, but relate to different structures and uses.

A provincial cultural leaflet documents the traditional celebrations of San Roque on August 16 and San Isidro Labrador. For San Roque, the leaflet mentions a morning procession to Fuente Untierma, with chocolate served there, followed by a dancing return for the Eucharistic celebration. The celebration of San Isidro Labrador includes a blessing of the fields, accompanied by dulzainas and wine. If either festival is important to your trip, check the current program before you travel.

To help with planning, decide what interests you most: the church, chapel, and rollo offer different historic buildings to explore; the museums and Castro have their own themes, while Encina Grande and Fuente Untierma bring the landscape and its earlier uses into focus. This can help you decide which topics you would like to prioritize during your stay in Solarana.
