Quintana Del Puente
Accommodation in Quintana Del Puente
Quintana Del Puente brings together architectural history, wine and landscapes as different points of interest for a stay. Cultural highlights include the historic bridge, the Iglesia de San Esteban and the Sanatorio Antituberculoso General Varela. Visitors can also enjoy tours with tastings at Bodega Pagos de Negredo and explore the area around the Arlanza.
The bridge and its historical context
The historic bridge dates from the time of Felipe II and has 18 arches. Lions holding coats of arms stand on the western balustrade. The sequence of arches shapes the structure, while the figures add a sculptural detail. During the Peninsular War, the bridge was also a site of exceptional strategic importance. Its architecture and history can be explored together here.
The church and different architectural movements
The Iglesia de San Esteban offers another perspective on architectural history. It is a Gothic building with Romanesque and possibly pre-Romanesque remains. Several architectural layers from different periods come together here. The Sanatorio Antituberculoso General Varela offers a different emphasis: it can be viewed as a hybrid of the Rationalism of the Modern Movement and more classical tendencies in Spanish architecture. While older building remains are significant in the church, the sanatorium centres on the relationship between different architectural movements.
Wine as an experience and part of history
At Bodega Pagos de Negredo, a current visitor offering meets a long-standing wine tradition with a specific historical date. Tours with tastings and a light snack are currently available for €8.00; check the arrangements in advance. In spring 2007, Pagos de Negredo presented its first Crianza red wine. It was also the first wine to be launched with the back label of the new D.O. Arlanza. A tasting visit and a specific milestone in the history of wine thus go hand in hand.
Landscape and nature
The area around Quintana Del Puente brings together floodplains, hills and the Arlanza River. It is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Unlike individual buildings, this combination describes the surrounding area as a whole rather than focusing on a single monument. Nature and landscape are therefore a distinct focus alongside architectural history and wine.
Getting here and finding a hotel
The Madrid–Irún railway line is a useful reference when planning your journey: it runs through the valley, and a station in Quintana Del Puente is less than a kilometre from the town centre. Check current train services before you travel. Consider whether you would prefer your stay to focus on individual buildings and the winery, or on the landscape and nature.
