When choosing a destination, what interests you there often matters. Puentedura brings together historic buildings and religious art, regional customs, hiking and a connection to the Arlanza River. Its distinctive features range from specific buildings to culture in the Arlanza Valley and paths and landscapes in the surrounding area.

Buildings and art

The Roman bridge of Puentedura is a civil structure with seven arches. This clearly distinguishes its function from the town’s religious buildings. The Ermita de San Millán houses notable 15th-century murals. The parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption contains a Churrigueresque altarpiece dating from 1710. The murals belong to an earlier period than the dated altarpiece. A local account from 2024 describes the Ermita de San Millán as one of the religious buildings around which Puentedura developed, and considers it possible that it is the town’s oldest building. The Ermita de la Virgen del Camino is dedicated to Puentedura’s patron saint. The two hermitages therefore have different connections: San Millán is linked to the town’s formation in a historical interpretation, while the Virgen del Camino is associated with patronage.

Regional and local customs

In the Arlanza Valley, the Marzas are performed in alternating song by two groups of men. The celebrations in honor of the Virgen del Camino begin with a ritual in which Esquenos are first collected and burned in the traditional Chisquera. The Marzas are associated with the Arlanza Valley, while the ritual is connected with the celebrations in Puentedura. The differences are therefore both in scale and form: regional call-and-response singing in the Arlanza Valley and a local ritual associated with the celebrations.

Paths and river landscape

Puentedura is part of the Ruta del Vino del Arlanza and is well suited to hiking. Nearby juniper groves, as well as oaks and holm oaks, provide shade along several paths. It is possible to travel calmly upstream on the Arlanza River. The landscape offers different points of interest: the trees provide shade along several paths, while the Arlanza offers a distinct connection to the river. Hiking and calm upstream travel are different activity options to consider when planning your trip.
