Hontoria: Hiking and Nature along the Río Lobos
Accommodation in Hontoria
In Hontoria, you can plan nature and cultural experiences around the routes that interest you: circular walks in the Parque Natural del Cañón del Río Lobos, a river route and a section between Hontoria del Pinar and San Leonardo de Yagüe each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Hontoria, the route type and the themes along the way can be a helpful basis for planning your trip.
Hiking in the Cañón del Río Lobos
The 10.87 km PRC-BU-05 Senda de Hontoria is a circular route that starts and ends in Hontoria del Pinar and lies entirely within the natural park. It showcases the protected area’s flora, fauna, geology and landscape. The 8.81 km Senda Espeleológica de Hontoria del Pinar is also a circular route that starts and ends in Hontoria del Pinar. It leads to caves and shafts in the Burgos section of the park. This gives you a choice of two circular routes of different lengths and with different themes: one introduces you to various aspects of the natural park’s landscape, while the other leads to caves and shafts.
The PR-SO-BU-65 Senda del Río follows a different course: this 25 km route is linear, follows the Río Lobos through the natural park and crosses the river several times. It ends in Hontoria del Pinar next to the Roman bridge. When there is heavy rain, crossing the river can be difficult or impossible. Take this limitation into account when planning and check the conditions before setting off.
Landscape and routes across municipal boundaries
The Parque Natural del Cañón del Río Lobos is a limestone canyon more than 25 km long, formed by river erosion. Cliffs with height differences of more than 100 m line the canyon. The natural park spans municipal areas in Burgos and Soria: in addition to Hontoria del Pinar in Burgos, it includes San Leonardo de Yagüe, Casarejos, Santa María de las Hoyas, Herrera de Soria, Nafría de Ucero and Ucero in Soria. This geographical expanse provides the setting for routes that connect Hontoria with other places and landscapes in both provinces.
A section of the Camino Natural Santander–Mediterráneo begins in the centre of Hontoria and heads towards San Leonardo de Yagüe. It is just over nine kilometres long and connects the provinces of Burgos and Soria. A rest area lies along the route before the entrance to the natural park. Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) fly around the cliffs there and also nest there. The route thus combines a specific trail between two towns with views of the canyon landscape and its birdlife.
The Camino Soriano passes a few hundred metres from the centre of Hontoria del Pinar and through the district of Aldea del Pinar. It can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Check current trail conditions locally before your trip. This route therefore differs from the circular walks that start and end in Hontoria del Pinar and from the linear Senda del Río.
Roman heritage and local history
The Puente romano de Hontoria del Pinar spans the Río Lobos. The Roman road connecting Clunia and Uxama ran across its site. The settlement of Hontoria del Pinar as it is known today was established in the 9th to 10th centuries during the Reconquista and repopulation. In the 18th century, Hontoria experienced a significant economic boom as a member of the Real Cabaña de Carreteros. The former railway station buildings in Hontoria del Pinar have also been preserved, with the exception of the goods shed.
Hontoria del Pinar’s industrial heritage includes the former resin distillery in Navas del Pinar. It adds another theme to the town’s history alongside its Roman connections and the development of the settlement. These different historical associations add a cultural dimension to trip planning that can be considered alongside the hiking routes.
Fiesta del Mayo
The Fiesta del Mayo is celebrated every year on 1 May in Hontoria del Pinar and is classified as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Castilla y León. After the maypole is raised, girls perform dances around it. The festival tradition also includes a shared meal of traditional caldereta serrana for the young men taking part. The fixed date and the customs described make the Fiesta a clearly defined cultural occasion, distinct from the landscape and history themes described as year-round attractions.
