If you’re looking for a hotel in O Vicedo, you can make beaches, coastal routes or cultural history the focus of your trip. The places and trails vary in landscape and character, giving you specific points of interest to help plan your days.

Beaches and Coastal Views

Playa de Abrela is 950 metres long, natural and sheltered, with moderate waves. The beach offers good conditions for water sports and borders a wooded area with picnic and recreation areas. Here, the beach and adjacent recreational areas come together. Playa de Xilloi is fully sheltered and has a recreation area. Toilets, showers and lifeguards are also available; these seasonal services may change. Check what is available for your visit before you go.

Several viewpoints offer different perspectives. Mirador Tixoso sits above the mouth of the Ría de Viveiro and the small Tixoso beach, and has a small rest area. Moreiras is a rest area with a viewpoint above the Ría de Vivero, overlooking the coast at Area Grande beach in San Román. From Mirador de San Román, the view stretches across San Román and Fuciño do Porco to the Ría de Viveiro. The rest area there has tables and water; visitor facilities may change.

The promenade and Mirador y paseo de Moledos viewpoint also offer a far-reaching panorama, taking in the port of O Vicedo, the RĂa de O Vicedo, Playa de Arealonga and the port of O Barqueiro. The view thus brings the harbour, ria and beach landscape into a single vista.

Coastal Trails and Outings in the Countryside

The Costa de O Vicedo coastal trail (PR-G 156) starts at the port of O Vicedo and ends at Area Grande beach. Detours lead to the church of Santo Estevo do Vicedo and the A Cruz de Baltar viewpoint. The trail is also suitable for cycling and horse riding. Its start and end points provide clear orientation, while the detours take in additional cultural sites and viewpoints.

Fuciño do Porco is a steep headland, explored via a winding path along wild cliffs. From there, you can enjoy views of the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. About 500 metres from the start of the path to Fuciño do Porco, there is a car park with space for 140 cars. The approximate distance refers to the start of the path, not to the headland itself.

The Morgallón – Río Sor – Morgallón route (PR-G 8) passes through a different landscape. Much of it follows a fishermen’s path along the Sor River and passes the remains of a hydroelectric plant, an old fishermen’s cable car, a watermill and a fishermen’s hut. While the PR-G 156 links coastal places and maritime views, the PR-G 8 follows the river past traces of work and use from earlier times.

Cultural History and Festivals

The remains of a former sardine salting factory can be seen at O Caolín beach. The industry flourished from the 18th century and continued until the first third of the 20th century. The church of San Esteban de O Vicedo offers a glimpse of another part of the area’s history: it was extensively remodelled in the 17th century and has three naves with round arches. The church of San Miguel de Negradas is Romanesque in style, a style associated with the 12th and 13th centuries.

Festival dates also vary: the Festas do Carme take place on the third Sunday in June and include a traditional maritime procession with fishing boats. The Romería Vikinga is usually held in late July and re-enacts the settlement of Moutillós in San Román. If these dates are important for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.

Nature and Wildlife

Isla Coelleira adds an important natural feature to the coastal landscape. The island is home to one of Galicia’s few breeding colonies of Calonectris diomedea; it is also a passage area for tens of thousands of migratory birds. The view of the island thus represents a different side of O Vicedo from its beaches, viewpoints and historic buildings.
