Fonsagrada: Waterfalls, Hiking and Culture
Accommodation in Fonsagrada
Fonsagrada offers a variety of highlights for your trip: an easy walking trail, waterfalls, cultural heritage and a strong Botelo tradition. The Seimeira de Vilagocende and the Seimeiras do Queixoiro each offer their own nature experiences. Other highlights include the Museo da Fonsagrada, a parish church on the Camino Primitivo, and the Feira do Butelo. A Fonsagrada is also part of the Eo-Oscos and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve region.
Hiking and Waterfalls
At Seimeira de Vilagocende, there is an easy walking trail just over one kilometer long with a moderate incline. It is also suitable for families with children. The site includes a picnic area, a spring, a wooden bridge and the remains of an old mill. If you are planning the walk, bear in mind that trail conditions can change.
The Seimeiras do Queixoiro are characterized by two waterfalls with different heights and access routes. The first waterfall is about 15 meters high. A staircase leads to a small sandy area and a pool where you can swim in hot weather. The second waterfall is about 12 meters high; a well-maintained route with stairs leads down to its lower section. The points of interest therefore differ: at the first, the focus is on the pool and the weather-dependent opportunity to swim; at the second, on the stairs leading to the lower section.
Museum and Camino Primitivo
The Museo da Fonsagrada, also known as the Museo Comarcal da Fonsagrada, was founded in 1984. It is dedicated to preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of the mountains of Lugo province. Through objects, documents and oral accounts, it documents the way of life, work and experiences of the people of Fonsagrada over time. Its collection includes ethnographic and archaeological items, as well as contemporary works of art. The museum thus spans everyday life and work, art and archaeological evidence.
The parish church, Igrexa Parroquial de Santa María da Fonsagrada, is located in Praza de España in A Fonsagrada and is connected to the Camino Primitivo. Alongside the museum collection, the church and its connection to the pilgrimage route are also highlights for cultural exploration.
Botelo and the Feira do Butelo
Botelo is a sausage typical of the A Fonsagrada area, made from pork ribs and other parts of the pig. The seasoned filling is stuffed into a pig's stomach or a thick pork intestine. The sausage is then cured and smoked over oak wood. Its ingredients and preparation give local food culture a tangible expression.
The Feira do Butelo da Fonsagrada takes place on the weekend before Carnival weekend. The exact dates vary from year to year. Visitors come to the fair to sample or buy Botelo and other products from traditional home-slaughtering. If you would like to make the festival part of your trip, check the date for the relevant year.
