Sigüeiro: Bridge, English Way and river trails
Accommodation in Sigüeiro
When planning a trip, Sigüeiro offers several specific points of interest: architectural history, the English Way, riverside trails and a local trout-fishing tradition. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sigüeiro, consider whether the bridge, a riverside route or the green spaces will shape your stay.
Ponte Sigüeiro and the English Way
Ponte Sigüeiro has five arches, including a Gothic pointed arch. Fernán Pérez de Andrade commissioned it in the 14th century. The English Way crosses the Tambre River over the bridge before entering the municipality of Santiago de Compostela. A well-known battle took place near the bridge in 1846: on one side were troops supporting President Ramón María Narváez, and on the other were forces commanded by Colonel Miguel Solís.
Two routes with different features
The Ruta do Tambre is a 10,240 m circular trail of natural interest along the right bank of the Tambre. It starts and ends at Praza da Foca in Sigüeiro. The Ruta do Camiño Real is 11,140 m long, is classified as easy, and ends at Ponte de Sigüeiro on the border with Santiago de Compostela. This makes it 900 m longer than the Ruta do Tambre. When choosing between them, you can compare the route type and length; the easy rating applies to the Ruta do Camiño Real.
Green spaces and riverside scenery
The Carboeiro recreation area is in the centre of Sigüeiro. It includes more than 60,000 m² of green space along the Carboeiro River, as well as a leisure area with native trees. Illa do Refuxio is a natural island in the middle of the Tambre, accessible via two concrete footbridges. The island also has a river swimming spot with a small waterfall. If you plan to swim there, check before your visit whether swimming access is currently available.
Penateixa is an open recreation area bordered by rows of alder and oak trees. From Praza da Foca, you can reach it via the CP-3801 provincial road towards Frades; the turnoff is signposted 1.5 km from the town. As local signposting may change, it’s worth checking it before setting off. Anglers can enjoy their sport in the Sigüeiro fishing area along the river.
Trout-fishing tradition and information about the Way
The Festa da Troita has been held in Sigüeiro since 1996, celebrating the local tradition of trout fishing. The festival includes a free trout tasting; the exact event dates may vary from year to year. The CEICI also focuses on the English Way. It is a municipal educational initiative with its own premises in Sigüeiro’s municipal cultural centre.
There is an information point about the English Way at the municipal swimming pool, where pilgrims can get information about local services. The point operates seasonally in summer. If you plan to visit, check its current availability.
