Corcubión brings together a range of reasons to visit: the Camino to Fisterra, historic buildings and the coastal landscape of the Ría. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether the stage, cultural heritage, or the beach and water should be the main focus of your trip.

The Camino and routes through Corcubión

The official Camino de Santiago stage from Corcubión to Fisterra is 14.2 kilometres long, is rated difficult and has an estimated duration of three hours. Along the stage, the route leads from Campo do Rollo to Campo de San Roque and through the village of O Vilar.

Corcubión’s municipal pilgrim hostel is run by the Asociación Gallega de Amigos del Camino de Santiago (AGACS). It welcomes pilgrims walking the Camino from Santiago to Fisterra. If you are taking the hostel into account when planning your stages, check its current opening hours in advance.

A local route starts at Praza de Castelao, passes the Mirador de Don Benigno Lago and then runs along the waterfront promenade. The promenade borders the entire Praia de Quenxe beach and connects it to Corcubión via the port.

Old town and cultural heritage

Corcubión’s old town is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Iglesia de San Marcos has the same designation. Romanesque remains from an earlier temple are preserved in its main chapel and on the corbels, so the building’s history can be read in specific details.

The Pazo de los Condes de Altamira dates from the 15th century and was remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Castelo do Cardeal had a different historical function: this military fortification was built in the mid-18th century to defend the Ría and is also designated a Bien de Interés Cultural.

In Redonda stands the Iglesia de San Pedro de Redonda, a Romanesque church. Remains of painted decoration have been preserved in the main chapel, both on the vault and on the east wall. This adds another cultural and historical point of interest in Redonda to the buildings in the town.

The participatory project Contos do Mar conveys Corcubión’s intangible cultural heritage, particularly its maritime heritage. It has led to a dramatised audio guide based on biographical and historical memories shared by local residents.

The Cárcere do Partido Xudicial building was renovated in 1996 and adapted for its present use as a tourist office and exhibition centre. Its current function sits alongside its history as a courthouse; check opening hours before visiting.

Beach, islands and views of the Ría

Praia de Quenxe is a 350-metre-long, sheltered urban beach with white sand. The waterfront promenade borders the entire beach and connects it to Corcubión via the port. Together with the local route, it offers another perspective on the coastal area, without equating the route with the Camino stage.

The two islands of the Islas Lobeiras belong to the European network of protected areas and are important natural areas for environmental protection. Boat trips on the Ría de Corcubión depart from Corcubión harbour and are offered in small groups by Taximar Robinson da Lobeira only at certain times of year. They may go as far as Isla Lobeira. As the trips are seasonal, it is advisable to check the dates in advance for your trip.

Cabo Cee lies four kilometres from the town of Corcubión, in the direction of Fisterra. It offers panoramic views of the Ría de Corcubión: Cabo Fisterra can be seen on the right and Monte Pindo on the left. This view adds a named coastal viewpoint to the beach and island perspectives.

Dates for planning your trip

The Mercado Medieval de Corcubión usually takes place on the third weekend of July. If it coincides with the festivities in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, the market is held the following weekend. During the market, clothing from the period being depicted and market and food stalls bring the historic town centre to life. If the market is important to your trip plans, check the date for your travel dates.
