Serradilla combines nature trails in MonfragĂĽe with religious art, local museums, and a boat trip on the Tagus. This gives you a range of options for planning your trip: a specifically named circular hiking route, cultural sites and collections, and regional traditions. You can tailor your stay to your interests in nature, history, or local culture.

Hiking and Nature in MonfragĂĽe National Park

Serradilla contributes 5,000 hectares to Monfragüe National Park. Two of the national park’s routes cross the Lugar Nuevo de Serradilla estate. Serradilla also has routes for hiking, cycling, horse riding, and vehicle excursions. The hiking routes pass through dehesa landscapes, rocky terrain, riverbanks, and Mediterranean woodlands. This makes nature tangible not just through the name of the national park, but also through the specific landscape types along the trails.

A specifically named landmark for hikers is the SL-CC 44 Garganta del Fraile circular trail. It starts in Serradilla and is 9 km long. While the network of routes also includes cycling, horse riding, and vehicle excursions, this particular trail is a circular hike with a specified length.

Visitors to the archaeological sites on the route to the rock paintings of MonfragĂĽe must be accompanied by a local guide. This is an important requirement if you plan to include this part of the cultural heritage in your itinerary.

Art, Museums, and Local Traditions

The Santuario del Stmo. Cristo de la Victoria houses a Baroque collection of frescoes and paintings, including works by Rubens, Claudio Coello, Caravaggio, and Francisco Gutierrez. The sculpture SantĂsimo Cristo de la Victoria was created by Domingo de Rioja in 1635.

The “La Huella del Hombre en Monfragüe” Interpretation Centre has dedicated spaces for history and archaeology, ethnography, nature, and tourist resources. It also has the “El Cuartu de los Muchachinus” children’s play area. The centre also serves as Serradilla’s tourist information office; admission and guided tours are free.

The Ethnographic Museum of Serradilla displays kitchen utensils, work equipment, furniture, and tools. The tools were collected by local residents. Visitors can also learn about Serraillanu, a local dialect that has nearly disappeared and is being revived by residents. Traditional events and festivals are also part of the town’s culture; some date back at least several hundred years.

Regional Specialties

Traditional specialties of Serradilla include the sweet dish la pringá and the traditional patatera. The town also has two wood-fired bakeries, “La Tahona D’arriba” and “Panadería Félix Bravo”. These typical foods and bakeries offer different insights into local food culture.

Boat Trip on the Tagus

The Barco de MonfragĂĽe departs from the Serradilla pier for cruises on the Tagus towards MonfragĂĽe National Park. From the boat, you can take in the Mediterranean woodland, characteristic wildlife, and the landscape, geology, and terrain of MonfragĂĽe. This view from the water complements exploring on foot with different vantage points over nature. If you plan a trip, check the current departure times in advance.
