Santa Cruz De La Sierra: Archaeology, Architecture and the Sierra
Accommodation in Santa Cruz De La Sierra
Santa Cruz De La Sierra combines archaeological remains, historic architecture and the landscapes of the Sierra and the Llanos de Trujillo. You can plan your trip around whether you are most interested in archaeology, architectural history or landscapes.
Megalithic Forms and Sanctuaries
Montaña Sagrada features various megalithic elements: a menhir, a pseudo-dolmen, trilithons, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms. On the southern slope of Montaña Sagrada lies Tercer Risco, a prehistoric sanctuary with rock footprints, cup marks and anthropomorphic stone forms. The named forms and features described offer several specific subjects to explore in the area's archaeology, which you can consider separately when planning your visit.
The summit of Risco Grande, known to locals as Risco de San Gregorio, also has archaeological traces: Arab remains lie above pre-Roman remains. Physical access may vary. The finds at Risco Grande and the forms at Tercer Risco each have their own focus; they can therefore be considered different aspects of the archaeological heritage, rather than combined into a single site.
Portals, Stelae and Facades in the Town
The Iglesia de la Vera Cruz has a late Gothic western portal dating from the late 15th century. Its details include pointed archivolts, decorated capitals and a stone cross. This allows you to understand the architecture not only by its stylistic label, but also by looking at individual features of the portal.
Three Roman stelae are visible on the outer north wall of the parish church; another four are located at Plaza Mayor. El Palacio preserves inscriptions and the coat of arms of the Chaves family on its facade. The building is partly used as a residence. These different features—ancient stelae, a late Gothic portal and an inscribed facade—offer several distinct perspectives on local history.
Below the building on Plaza Mayor is the Centro de Interpretación. It offers tourist information about Santa Cruz De La Sierra and the Sierra, as well as a free guided tour of its premises. As visitor services may change, check on site whether the tour is currently available.
Ritual and Cultural Guidance
Noche de los Chozos is a local ritual held every year after dark on September 13 in Plaza Mayor and the surrounding areas. If you plan your trip around this date, check the latest event details in advance.
Vettonia Rutas Culturales offers cultural guidance through the town and Montaña Sagrada, focusing on nature, archaeology and local history. If you would like to include this guidance in your plans, confirm availability in advance.
Routes and Landscape
A marked route leads from the Convento de los Agustinos through stone-paved lanes, past channels carved into granite, and along paved paths up the slope of the Sierra de Santa Cruz. The route combines different types of path surfaces with the architectural and landscape features described. As trail conditions may change, check the latest information before setting out.
The Cañada Real is now largely unused as a livestock track. At the same time, it forms part of one of the Caminos Mozárabes routes to Santiago, which passes through Trujillo. Its role as part of a pilgrimage route therefore differs from that of the marked route described on the slope of the Sierra.
The plains extending from Santa Cruz De La Sierra towards Ibahernando, Ruanes and Trujillo, with their pastureland and dry farming, are part of the ZEPA Llanos de Trujillo. Among the birds that are easy to spot there are the great bustard, little bustard, Montagu's harrier, European roller, Thekla's lark and calandra lark. Birdlife is seasonal and variable; if you are planning to watch birds, take the time of year into account when choosing your travel dates. Alongside the archaeological and architectural themes, the landscape offers a distinct focus on nature.
