Discover culture, nature and hotels in Plasencia
Accommodation in Plasencia
Plasencia combines architectural history, festive traditions and opportunities for outdoor activities. If you are planning to visit for an event, choosing the right travel dates is especially important.
Architectural history and museums in Plasencia
Construction of the Catedral Vieja de Plasencia began in the 13th century. Its style transitions from Romanesque to Gothic; the Catedral Vieja is also home to the Museo Catedralicio. The main altar of the Catedral de Plasencia includes carvings by Gregorio Fernández. The city therefore offers a range of art-historical points of interest, from the development of an architectural style to works by a sculptor known by name.
The medieval aqueduct can also be understood through its specific features. Built in the 16th century, it is 200 metres long and consists of 55 semicircular arches. Its length and the number of arches give a clear impression of the scale of the structure. Plasencia is also home to the Centro de interpretación medieval de la ciudad de Plasencia.
The Museo etnográfico y textil devotes several rooms to the production of linen and wool. Its collections include traditional costumes from the province of Cáceres, household furnishings and ceramics, as well as objects related to farming and livestock. Visitors interested not only in buildings but also in textile and everyday culture will find a different way to explore the region’s history here.
Nature and time outdoors
Monte Valcorchero is a protected landscape within the municipality of Plasencia. Hiking, climbing and mountain biking are possible there. These activities offer different ways to experience the landscape. Which one is right for your stay depends on how you would like to spend your time outdoors.
Parque de la Isla has a riverside promenade along the Jerte, which is also suitable for cyclists. In summer, a swimming channel with natural water is set up there. As this facility is seasonal, check whether it is open during your travel dates. This distinguishes the seasonal swimming area from the riverside promenade, which is also described, without treating them as the same offering.
Festivals and culinary events
Martes Mayor takes place on the first Tuesday in August and is designated a regional festival of tourist interest. Stalls selling handcrafted products are set up throughout the old town. Check the date for your intended year of travel; the selection of stalls may also vary from year to year. If the festival is to shape your stay, plan around the specific calendar.
The Semana Santa processions in Plasencia take place from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Since 2012, Semana Santa has held the status of a regional festival of tourist interest. As the dates change each year, check the dates for your year of travel. The set period and the changing calendar are two different pieces of information: the period runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, but the specific dates are not the same every year.
At the Feria de la Tapa, participating bars and restaurants in the city offer three special tapas for tasting. The tapas are judged by the public and a professional jury. Dates and participating establishments may vary from year to year. The Feria is therefore a specific event for a food-focused trip; check when it is held and who is taking part before planning your visit.
