Cañamero: Geopark, Gorge and Rock Art
Accommodation in Cañamero
In the town centre of Cañamero is the Centro de Recepción de Visitantes de Cañamero. Several rooms explain the Geopark’s characteristic geological formations. Admission is free; visits can be self-guided or guided. Check the visiting conditions before travelling, as access conditions may change. The centre introduces the Geopark’s geology in the town centre; the gorge, river landscape and rock art offer different highlights.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Cañamero, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay: geology and landscape, a route, prehistoric rock art or seasonal water activities offer different themes for your trip.
Ruecas Gorge and Routes
The Ruecas Gorge stretches for about two kilometres northeast of Cañamero, between high quartzite ridges. It can be reached from La Jarilla, a higher-lying part of the municipality of Cañamero, via the Camino Natural de Las Villuercas. Local conditions may affect access, so check them before your visit.
The Ruta de Isabel la Católica begins in Cañamero and ends in Puebla de Guadalupe, at the monastery there. After leaving Cañamero, it enters the Ruecas Gorge and passes through riverside vegetation dominated by an alder gallery forest. Griffon vultures, golden eagles, Bonelli’s eagles and black storks can be seen along the route. Sightings of these species are seasonal and not guaranteed.
Rock Art and Traces of Prehistory
The rock walls of Cueva de la Chiquita bear more than a hundred symbols dating from the late Neolithic through the Bronze Age to the beginning of the Iron Age. The cave is open to visitors, easy to access and equipped with information panels; check the visiting conditions before your trip.
The Ruecas Gorge contains prehistoric caves and rock shelters with schematic rock paintings in shades of red and black. The Cancho de la Burra rock shelter in the Sierra de la Madrila also contains schematic rock paintings dating from the Chalcolithic period.
River Landscape, Water and Culture
The Sierra de la Madrila features dense riverside vegetation and natural pools along the Ruecas River; conditions at the pools vary seasonally. Swimming, various water sports and fishing are possible at the Cancho del Fresno reservoir beach. Water conditions and permitted activities there may vary seasonally.
Examples of Cañamero’s religious architecture include the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Belén. The Ruta Mitológica offers a different cultural connection: its twelve stops draw on traditions associated with earlier local routes. The cultural range therefore extends from religious architecture to a route that draws on local traditions.
