Vilamaniscle: Albera Landscape and Trails
Accommodation in Vilamaniscle
Vilamaniscle combines the Albera landscape with trails and a town centre crossed by the GR-11. If you include nature and hiking in your travel plans, the GR-11 route and the trail to Mirador del Suro Gros are clear points of reference. Other highlights include the Església de Sant Gil, Castell de Vilamaniscle and winegrowing in the Albera. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether you are more interested in the landscape and outdoor activities or in local history and wine.
Landscape and wildlife
The Paratge Natural de l’Albera nature reserve surrounds Vilamaniscle. The town centre is also surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and cork oak and pine forests. Wild specimens of the protected Albera tortoise live in the municipality; roe deer, badgers, foxes and wild boar are also common. Cultivated land, forests and diverse wildlife are therefore all part of the landscape. For nature lovers, this offers a broader picture than simply looking at individual trails: the diversity of the landscape and its wildlife also shapes Vilamaniscle’s character.
Views and orientation
Mirador del Suro Gros offers views of Costabona, Coll del PertĂşs, Montagut and Serra de Malbosc. From the same viewpoint, you can see vineyards, pine forests, scrubland, dry grasslands and mountain meadows. The view thus combines named landscape features with different types of vegetation and meadows. If, while hiking, you like to take in both individual landmarks and the wider landscape, this viewpoint offers both perspectives.
Trails in the town
The GR-11 passes through Vilamaniscle’s town centre. The trail to Mirador del Suro Gros starts at Plaça Major, follows Carrer de LluĂs Pagès and Carrer del Nord to the end of the street, and then continues along a rural path. Another point of reference is EsglĂ©sia de Sant Gil: it lies about 200 metres south of the town centre and can be reached from Plaça Major via a paved path. Plaça Major thus serves as a shared reference point for different routes. The church is reached via a paved approach; the route to the viewpoint first follows two streets and then a rural path. You can therefore distinguish between the two routes when planning your visit.
Local history, wine and jazz
Castell de Vilamaniscle has new lighting that highlights its heritage value and makes it possible to experience the castle at night, too. This adds an architectural landmark to the town’s natural surroundings and trails. Winegrowing is also part of the local character: Celler Mas Pòlit is a family winery in the Albera landscape and cultivates mountain vineyards on slate soils. Jazzejada returns to Vilamaniscle as a festival of jazz and wine. Together, these themes show different sides of the town, from its architecture and winegrowing to its cultural festival.
